Morning Manna: One of my favorite Bible passages is Psalm 46:1-2, 10. “God is our refuge and strength a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations…”
It is evident the Psalmist knew how to trust God in difficult times. According to a recent poll, Forty percent of Americans are dealing with elevated stress. Now, difficulty is present in every phase of life. From the infant who is learning to walk, the young boy learning to read, the young couple taking care of their aging parents- we all face it. The question is how do we deal with the stresses that overwhelm us? The answer is found in the word of God. I believe there are certain things we need to KNOW! By taking God’s truth and planting it deep in our hearts, we will be rooted when the hardest storms hit.
Notice three words that describe God in verse 1. First, God is our refuge. What is a refuge? A refuge is a shelter, a fortress but more importantly, it is a place. How many of you know a person who only goes to church in a crisis or only prays and opens their Bible when they’re in trouble? Yes, our Lord is a refuge but He wants to be a place you live in and not just occupy on weekends. Psalm 91 says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” We can only find that rest when we dwell permanently in His place of refuge. The Psalmist knew this.
The second word I want you to notice is “strength.” While refuge is a place, His strength is the power! This power is a supernatural strength available to those who make God their refuge. What is the anointing? It is a supernatural strength to do what you couldn’t do otherwise without God’s help. God anointed David to kill a giant with a sling. God anointed Moses to lead a nation. God anointed Paul to overcome a snake bite! Has the difficulty you are facing brought you down? Do you feel like you have no strength? I have good news for you! His supernatural strength is available to you!
The final word I want you to notice is, “help.” This is His presence. In the gospel of John, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our helper! In the Greek, He is referred to as the “parakletos”, one who is called alongside to help! Jesus knew we would need help. This is why He sent the Holy Spirit. He is not an “it”. He is a person. Hebrews 4:15-16 says, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive each and find grace to help in our time of need.”
In closing the Psalmist says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Warren Wiersbe says, this phrase means to “take your hands off of it.” Isn’t that what we have to do sometimes? After we have done all we can do, in yielded surrender place our concerns in the Lord’s hands.
My prayer is that through every difficult situation, we will find his peace!
