The man the crowd chose to free instead of Jesus was not named Barabbas. Most Christians have never been told this. Here is what his name actually means.

"Barabbas" is not a name. It is an Aramaic title. "Bar" means "son of." "Abba" means "father."

Barabbas literally means "son of the father."

On the day of Passover, the Roman governor brought two men before the crowd and said choose one to release.

One was Jesus. The Son of the Father.

The other was a criminal whose title literally meant "son of the father."

The innocent Son of the Father was condemned to die so that the guilty son of the father could walk free.

That is not a coincidence. That is the gospel compressed into a single courtroom scene.

And most Christians who have read that story dozens of times have absolutely no idea what the name Barabbas actually means.

Now here is what makes it even more staggering.

Some of the earliest manuscripts of Matthew's Gospel record Barabbas's full name.

It was Jesus Barabbas.

Jesus, son of the father.

The crowd was given a choice between two men with the same name. One was Jesus, the Son of the true Father. The other was Jesus, the son of a human father. One was innocent. The other was guilty.

And the guilty one went free.

That is the entire story of salvation acted out in real time in front of a crowd that did not understand what they were choosing.

The innocent dying in the place of the guilty. The righteous taking the sentence that belonged to the unrighteous. A man who deserved death walking out of prison because someone else took his cross.

Barabbas did not earn his freedom. He did not negotiate it. He did not deserve it.

He woke up that morning expecting to die. And by the afternoon, someone else was hanging in his place.
