St. John's United Church of Christ - Marine City

St. John's United Church of Christ - Marine City Each Sunday Divine Worship and Children's School begins at 11:00. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday and third Sunday of each month. St. John’s!

We are a family centered congregation. Children are welcome! Our children worship with us for the first part of the service – - then they are dismissed for Sunday School. John’s United Church of Christ was founded in January of 1900 as St. John’s Evangelical Church. In 1934, we became St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, and finally in 1957 became St. John’s UCC when the Evangelical and Re

formed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches merged to become the United Church of Christ. The original church members, about 45 families and numerous individuals, were German, as the neighborhood had many German immigrants, and all services were in that language until 1921. At least some services were still held in German until 1932. Our original church building on West Boulevard was built and occupied by us for 115 years- from 1902 until May of this year when this building, the former St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, was purchased. By comparison, this building is new- it was built just 48 years ago, in 1969. It’s modeled on the church and meeting halls in Williamsburg and Yorktown, both in Pennsylvania. The congregation here wanted the architecture to look colonial rather than the medieval or European styles popular for churches at the time. The spectacular wooden ceiling was designed to resemble the inside of a ship. This seems very appropriate for Marine City! Inside the sanctuary, you will see two notable pieces of art. The stained-glass window behind the altar is of St. Mark, which reflects the first occupants of the building. There are no current plans to change this window. The second is the painting of Jesus over the sanctuary entrance. This painting is actually a photograph of the original artwork in our former church building. As that is a mural painted directly on to the wall, we couldn’t remove it to bring it with us. However, modern technology made it possible to bring it with us anyway! We thank you for visiting St. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Greetings to all
I hope this finds you well.
I was talking with someone the other day about what makes a good Christian a good Christian. The conversation started because someone, knowing my background, wanted to share with me that they were a good Christian. So, being who I am, I asked them what made them a good Christian. They then shared that they were a nice person who did nice things. Hmmm... Or does that make you a nice person. Although being nice is part of it, the reading in Matthew provides a rather different perspective on what it means to be a Christian. I have always felt that we are called to be Christians, followers of Jesus, living as Jesus lived, rather than being called to be comfortable.

I invite you to join us on Sunday and share your experience.

I also want to share with you that the life and ministry of the church continues whether you are able to physically attend.

The need is great and the challenges large. I encourage you to continue to give as you are able either by sending a check, we pick up mail daily so it will be secure, or through the giving tab on the church website.

Be kind to each other and those you meet along the way. A little bit of compassion and kindness seems to have an exponential effect in these challenging times.

I look forward to sharing Sunday's service with you however we do it.

And remember, be kind to yourself .

Take care and be well, Peace be with you, Ken

Greetings to all

I had several interesting conversations over the last couple of weeks. A couple of those conversations made me think about this week's readings.

One was with a businessman visiting one of my clients. My client likes to hire recovering people and those returning from incarceration. This person told my client they would never do that because you can't trust "those" people because they never change. I/m glad Jesus didn't feel the same way.

Another conversation was with one of my nonprofit clients. We discussed how we both serve a significant number of people who are not necessarily in the main stream of society. That includes everyone from distressed populations to people who don't fit in because they think and act differently. All the people Jesus chose to hang out with.

One of my priests growing up would say, "church is a hospital for sinners, not a country club for saints."

Come and share your experience.

Greetings to all
I hope this finds you well.

I must admit that I find it rather troubling when I talk with people and they share their opinions with be about what is going on in their lives and in the world and it seems to be in direct contradiction to what they say they believe. This is even true of some people I know, have known and I thought I knew.

At some point we find ourselves wondering where the Spirit is and waiting for the Spirit to show up. Only to discover the Spirit might be waiting for us to do the same.

Have you ever experienced such a thing? I catch myself thinking, "Come on, God, I need to buy a vowel here." (Wheel of Fortune joke).

In this week's reading, we experience the same situations. Maybe you can relate. Come and share.
