Tomorrow, Monday, Sept 22 is the Autumnal Equinox--the day that daylight and night are equal? Nope. Refraction (bending) of the sun's light in the earth's atmosphere causes us to be able to see it before it actually rises. In Atlanta, we will have almost 8 minutes more daylight than night on the equinox. On Friday, September 26, sunrise is at 7:28 am and sunset is at 7:28 pm. But we can still regard the equinox as a day of balance because the sun is above the equator and the north pole isn't pointing either away from or towards the sun. Tuesday, the northern hemisphere will be leaning ever so slightly away from the sun, and the direct rays of the sun will be below the equator. Enjoy your last day of summer!

The September equinox marks a moment of balance — when day and night are equal (nearly) across the globe. In 2025, the equinox occurs on September 22 at 18:19 UTC (1:19 p.m. CDT). That’s when the sun shines directly over Earth’s equator. This equinox brings spring to Earth’s Southern Hemisph...

🌕✨ Celestial Events of September 2025 ✨🌑☀️

This September brings us a trio of spectacular sky events that you won’t want to miss!

📅 September 7 – Blood Moon (Total Lunar Eclipse)
The Moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, glowing a deep copper-red. Visible across much of the world, this dramatic “Blood Moon” will light up the night sky for over an hour.

📅 September 21 – Solar Eclipse
A breathtaking solar eclipse will occur as the Moon perfectly aligns with the Sun. Depending on your location, you may see a partial or total eclipse. Always use eclipse glasses to view safely!

📅 September 23 – Fall Equinox
The official start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Day and night will be nearly equal, marking a change in the seasons and a perfect balance of light and dark.

🔭 Tips for Watching:
• Find a dark, open area away from city lights.
• Use safe solar viewing methods for the eclipse.
• Capture the moment with photos, but don’t forget to enjoy with your own eyes!

🍂🌌 September is truly a month of cosmic wonders—mark your calendars and look up!

Feeling sort of distant? Today is aphelion--the day that Earth is farthest from the sun. The exact time is 3:54 pm in eastern time zone. I thought this was interesting: This article says that because of the eccentricity of Earth's orbit, aphelion and perihelion are drifting forward about one day every 58 years, and in the short term, the date can vary by a couple of days. So much for trying to declare a national holiday for aphelion or perihelion because it wouldn't stay the same.

Our planet Earth reaches aphelion – its greatest distance from the sun for this year – at 3 p.m. CDT (20 UTC) on July 3. At that time, Earth will be 94,502,714 miles (152,087,376 km) from the sun. It’s been a hot summer in parts of the Northern Hemisphere. And Earth’s aphelion always comes i...
