Do not Grieve the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 4:30 (MEV) “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you are sealed for the day of redemption.”
Not grieving the Holy Spirit requires a sensitivity to the Spirit. This sensitivity is something we learn in relationship with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. To honor the word of God in obedience is to honor the work of the Spirit in our lives. Obedience will keep us from grieving the Holy Spirit.
Furthermore, as Pentecostal believers we believe the Holy Spirit speaks and directs our steps in the journey of faith. Thus, we must be “in tune” with the Spirit. We must be sensitive to “the voice” and “nudges” of the Holy Spirit. When I feel I have failed in obeying the Word or the Spirit’s voice, I must repent. Be quick to repent!
If we grieve the Spirit, we can become like the children of Israel…enemies of God!
Isaiah 63:10 (NLT)
“… But they rebelled against him
and grieved his Holy Spirit.
So, he (God) became their enemy
and fought against them.”
What are the indicators that we may have grieved the Spirit? Well Paul goes on to say…
Ephesians 4:31-32 (MEV)
Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outbursts, and blasphemies, with all malice, be taken away from you. *And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.
Based on the Scripture, I believe one can say that grieving the Spirit affects our relationships. When we verbally abuse people with our words and thoughts. Keeping the thoughts and words we speak “God-honoring” will keep the Holy Spirit nearby and we need the Holy Spirit!
The Scripture also indicates the behavior that invites the Spirit to be close. “And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.”
These are signs that we have partnered with the Holy Spirit and are in right relationship with God. The goal in not grieving the Spirit is living out the truth of God’s word in the community of believers.
Strive not to grieve the Holy Spirit but to honor Him by listening and obeying. The end result will be peace in your heart, with other believers, and with the Lord Jesus Christ.
