Our college visitors from Ft. Worth, Texas made the Corydon Democrat Newspaper this week. This was their instructor, Heath Stapleton's third visit to Marengo Big Springs Old Town Church and Cemetery. Always asking the same question, "where are all the statues to this great man, David Mitchell Stewart"? (DM Stewart and his wife Anna Sloan Stewart are Marengo's Founding Family.) Plan to attend our July 4th America 250 Celebration at the church as local Storyteller Jeanie Melton will be presenting "Herstory" of Anna's adventure into the wilderness of Big Springs with 2 year old Baby Samuel Mitchell Stewart riding on horseback blazing the trail. Her son Samuel grew up to be one of the first owners in 1883 of the National Landmark Marengo Cave along with brother Lewis Byron Stewart also the builder of the Marengo Big Springs Old Town Church. The Stewart Family would own the cave for over 70 years.

Early Monday Morning April 6: Heath Stapleton and his tour group at the gravesites of Marengo-Big Springs' founders Anna Sloan Stewart and David Mitchell Stewart. Heath is explaining the significance of the Restoration Religious Movement this "First Family" brought to the Indiana Territory in 1813. He called D.M.Stewart a "great man"! After establishing the first church in Marengo in 1813, David Mitchell Stewart rode his horse to Hartfield aka English to start a church in the Kincaid Family's cabin in 1819. This church later became the English Christian Church and relocated to Marengo as Highview Christian Church. Four other local churches were established using the Marengo Big Springs Old Town Church to meet until moving into their own new "modern" buildings in the late 1800's. They were the Marengo Evangelical United Brethan Church, the Marengo Methodist Church, the Marengo Christian Church, and the Goodman Ridge Christian Church.
