Happy and Blessed Memorial Day! Please see below for a message from Bishop Frank J. Dewane.
Today we especially honor the men and women who have died in service to this country. As Catholics, a powerful remembrance is to pray for the repose of the souls of the fallen soldiers, both known and unknown, and for the consolation of their families.
The Holy Father has consistently drawn the Faithful to the theme of peace in his first year as Pope, making it one of the early hallmarks of his papacy. Peace was the centerpiece of Pope Leo XIV’s first Easter message, issuing a powerful appeal to world leaders and nations engaged in war and violence, proclaiming: “Let those who have weapons lay them down! Let those who have power to unleash wars choose peace!”
Beyond diplomatic initiatives and appeals to world leaders, Pope Leo XIV has consistently reminded Catholics that the responsibility for peace belongs to every person.
“We wish to the tell to the whole world that it is possible to build peace, a new peace; that it is possible to live together with all people of every religion and every race; that we wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ, united as brothers and sisters, all united in a world of peace.”
In following the example of Our Holy Father, pray that all people be united in a world of peace and work together to put an end to war. Pray today for those who have died because of, or are currently suffering amidst, the atrocities of war.
May the souls of the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in eternal peace.
Have a Blessed Memorial Day!
God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women
who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
