Thought for the week:

The Sunday before Pentecost is called on our church calendar the Sunday of the Holy Fathers. On this day each year we are asked to remember what our fathers did: specifically, the 318 Church Fathers who came together in 325 AD in Nicea| to form the First Ecumenical Council.

The Emperor Constantine had just put an end to the bloody, three hundred-year persecution of the Church, during which 11 million Christians gave their lives for Christ. Christians now began coming out of the catacombs to worship in churches.

These 318 bishops came together to define the teachings of Christ which were being challenged by false teachers. They gave us, among other things, the Nicene Creed, the summary of our faith, which is sang at every Divine Liturgy.

We remember the Apostles, the martyrs, the saints. We remember what they suffered to make the Holy Spirit available to us next Sunday. And, also, we must remember that like they, we must pass on to others this same Holy Spirit by our words and deeds.

So that in the words of the Apostle James: “THE WORLD MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN.

Thought for the week:

His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” We have to keep in mind the concept of Old Testament morality: "The good prosper, the evil are punished." The apostles grew up with this mentality; therefore, this man's blindness is a result of sin.

Jesus gives the disciples a very interesting answer. He said, "It was no sin either of this man or of his parents. Rather it was to let God's works be made manifest in him." Christ made a radical change in the understanding of this "mentality." This man is not blind because of sin; he is blind so that the goodness of God can be shown through him..

Perhaps we should keep today's Gospel in mind the next time we ask, "Why me, Lord?" Remember Christ's answer to His disciples. "So that the goodness of God may be made manifest in him"

Thought for the week:

In our Sunday Gospel Jesus heals a man who has been paralyzed for 38 years. You have to ask why this man?

Why did Jesus heal this man? All the other times in the New Testament Jesus healed people as a result of their coming to him: The blind men crying out, the l***r begging, Jairus asking for the healing of his daughter, the centurion for his servant. This man does nothing. He does not seek out Jesus. Jesus knew there would be no gratitude or thanks. So, why did Jesus heal this man who had done nothing to deserve it and would not be grateful?

Because He is a God of grace. He gives to the grateful and the ungrateful.
