A great summary, and even better, the Q&A in the comments!
🍑 Conservation Burial Georgia
In the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, where pine and hickory trees stretch toward the sky, you’ll find one of the South’s most meaningful intersections of history, ecology, and remembrance, Potts Mountain Burial Ground (PMBG).
Located in Marble Hill, PMBG is Georgia’s first dedicated green cemetery on perpetually conserved land, protected forever under a conservation easement held by the Atlantic Coast Conservancy (ACC) a nonprofit land trust that has safeguarded over 125,000 acres across 18 states since 2010. This partnership ensures that every burial supports long-term ecological balance, water protection, and habitat conservation.
At Potts Mountain, burial means becoming part of the forest again. No embalming, no concrete vaults, no polished marble, just the quiet return of body to earth. Family and friends are encouraged to take part in the process, lowering their loved one by hand and covering the grave with local soil, flowers, and memory. The surrounding 1,378 acres of preserved land are home to birds, deer, and native wildflowers that thrive undisturbed, ensuring that each burial contributes to the continued health of the ecosystem.
The site’s history runs deep. The land once belonged to Young Potts, an early settler who founded the original Potts Family Cemetery here in 1843 after the death of his infant son, Augustus. Today, those historic stones stand beside the new green burial meadow, a testament to how one family’s legacy evolved into a modern model of conservation and connection.
The Atlantic Coast Conservancy envisions Potts Mountain not just as sacred ground, but as part of a broader commitment to ecosystem services, the natural processes, from clean air to fertile soil, that sustain life itself. Every burial here helps protect the land in perpetuity, supporting conservation projects that benefit both community and climate.
Potts Mountain Burial Ground welcomes people of all faiths, identities, and backgrounds to rest within this living landscape. Families can visit, walk, and even host small ceremonies surrounded by the sounds of nature, a reflection of Georgia’s timeless connection between land and life.
