Today is observed as Holy Cross Day. Thirty years ago on this day also a Saturday I was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church. I have been blessed.

Christmas Eve services were well-attended. There lots of hymns of the season and everyone enjoyed the goodies after the service.

Next Sunday is the First Sunday after Christmas. The service begins at 9 am.

It is Easter Day; I wonder what Easter Sundays were like during the time of the Plaque and the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 and 1919. In this time and those times it helps me to remember that those too were occasions to remember the hope and healing that was being shown. People are helping each other in ways not seen in a while. People are recovering even after being on a ventilator in an ICU. People are expressing love in ways that convey the sentiment even in a time of social distance. Past efforts and what we do in the next days and weeks will spell the difference to this nation and the world. Pray for chaplains of many faiths serving alongside their healthcare team mates being present to those struggling with the effects of the virus and forming the link between those solitary in bed and waiting families. While we may only be out on alternate days of the week, we can call another person to see how they are feeling; we can write a note and send it to the local hospital. We can offer prayer, believing that prayer does make a difference. We have learned that a dear friend has died after a long struggle with a multitude of health issues. We are in pain but as our daughter wrote, there can be no better day for a heavenly homecoming than this day when Christians are reminded that death is not the final word. Alleluia! Christ is Risen. The Lord is Risen, Indeed! Alleluia!

Welcome to St. John’s Church in Marathon NY. We are a country church with a small but welcoming congregation. We are Episcopalian, part of the Diocese of Central NY. Our Bishop, the Right Reverend Dr. DeDe Duncan-Probe, feels we are an important presence and has visited us. Our pastor, the Rev. Tom Margrave, has served churches of all sizes, loves to do children’s sermons, and involve children in the full life of the church. He is an Army combat veteran and is very familiar with the challenges of returning to civilian life. Not regular in church attendance or not familiar with church at all? We’ll help you feel welcome and included. There are always refreshments and conversation after the service. As a follower of Jesus once said in invitation: Come and see!

After a Sunday when all but 3 people were away, Sunday, November 10, will bring us back to worship. Any are welcome to worship with us. We are a work in progress. Give us children and we’ll have a program for the children. Starting the 17th we will have music. Enough singers—we’ll have a choir. But whoever comes will find a group discerning what God wants us to do in Marathon and the surrounding area. The 10th is the Marine Corps’ birthday and we will remember those who have served our nation in war and peace.

It was a chilly start to the service today but the church warmed up nicely. The thermostat is now on auto so it w be nicely. Father Tom brought egg salad croissant sandwiches and donuts to share. We were greeted by a nice pot of flowers, a fair size pumpkin, and some colorful gourds, courtesy of Connie White. Thanks, Connie. We are leaving them out on the steps so others may enjoy them.
