You Matter More Than You Think

Read: Matthew 9:35–10:8
Jesus looked at the crowds and saw people who needed compassion, hope, healing, and the good news of God’s kingdom. Then he said to his disciples:
“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.”

So what did Jesus tell them to do?
First, he told them to pray. Pray that the Lord would send out workers into his harvest field.
Then Jesus sent them.

The twelve disciples were not all famous. Most of us can name Peter, John, or Matthew, but what about Thaddaeus? Or Simon the Zealot? The Bible does not tell us a lot about every disciple because the Bible is not ultimately about them. It is about Jesus.

But that does not mean they were unimportant.
Jesus taught them. Jesus called them. Jesus sent them. And through ordinary people, God carried the good news of Jesus into the world.
That is still how God works today.

You do not have to be famous to matter. You do not have to have all the answers to be useful. God can use simple acts of faith, love, kindness, prayer, invitation, and encouragement to bless others.

We can pray for pastors, teachers, missionaries, churches, and Christians sharing Jesus.
And we can also be part of the answer to that prayer.

One invitation.
One conversation.
One act of kindness.
One opportunity to point someone to Jesus.

The harvest is still plentiful.
Lord, send workers into your harvest field, and use us too.

What Makes a Good Pastor?

John the Baptist ate bugs. Elijah wore strange clothes. Moses said he was slow to speak.

That makes us wonder: What kind of person does God use to preach and teach his Word?

In 1 Corinthians 4, Paul reminds us that pastors, teachers, and leaders are not meant to be judged by popularity, personality, speaking style, or outward appearance. They are servants of Christ, entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed.

“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” - 1 Corinthians 4:2

The most important thing is not whether someone is the funniest, smartest, loudest, or most impressive. The most important thing is whether they faithfully teach God’s Word.

God’s message is a mystery we could never figure out on our own: that God loves sinners so much that he sent Jesus to save them. We do not earn forgiveness. We do not earn heaven. Jesus has already done everything needed to save us.

And who does God use to share that message?

Sometimes surprising people. Imperfect people. Weak people. Ordinary people.

But when they faithfully point people to Jesus, they are exactly the kind of servants God uses to care for his people.

Who Takes Care of God’s People?

Read: Numbers 27:15-23

Moses had led God’s people for 40 years. He guided them through the wilderness, prayed for them, warned them, settled disputes, and reminded them of God’s promises.

But Moses knew he would not be the one to lead Israel into the Promised Land. So, he prayed that God would provide someone to care for his people, so they would not be “like sheep without a shepherd.”

God answered by choosing Joshua.

Joshua would lead God’s people, but Joshua was not perfect. Moses was not perfect either. No earthly leader is. That is still true today. God gives us parents, teachers, pastors, principals, coaches, and other leaders to help care for us and point us back to his Word. They may not do everything perfectly, but God can still work through them.

The best leaders are not the ones who are perfect. The best leaders are the ones who keep pointing people back to Jesus.

And Jesus is the greatest leader of all. He is our Good Shepherd. He never sins, never fails, and promises to lead his people safely all the way home.

“May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community…” Numbers 27:16

Used to Be

Matthew used to be known as a tax collector.

That meant people probably avoided him, judged him, and remembered him for what he had done. But Jesus saw more than Matthew’s past. Jesus saw someone he loved.

So Jesus walked right up to Matthew and said, “Follow me.”

What an amazing reminder for all of us. We are not defined by our worst moments, our embarrassing mistakes, or the sins others may remember. Because of Jesus, we are forgiven. We are made new. We are God’s children.

That’s what we used to be.

In Christ, we are something new.

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.”
— Matthew 9:9

Come follow Jesus with us.

We all have moments we wish we could undo.

Words we wish we could take back. Choices that make us cringe. Sins we would rather forget.

The apostle Paul understood that feeling. He once fought against Christians and tried to stop people from believing in Jesus. Looking back, he called himself “the worst” of sinners.

But then Paul points us to the best news:

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
1 Timothy 1:15

Jesus did not come for people who had it all together. He came for sinners. He came for Paul. He came for you. He came for me.

On the cross, Jesus took our worst and gave us his best. Our sin was placed on him, and his righteousness was given to us.

So when guilt reminds you of your worst, let the cross remind you of Jesus’ best.

In Christ, you are forgiven.
In Christ, you are loved.
In Christ, you are a dearly loved child of God.

And there is nothing better than that.

🔥 God’s Biggest Promise: “I Will Be with You.”

Have you ever felt like Moses?

God called Moses from the burning bush and gave him a huge job: go back to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let God’s people go.

Moses felt scared and unqualified.
“Who am I?” he asked.

God’s answer was not, “You are strong enough.”
God’s answer was: “I will be with you.”

That is still God’s promise for us today.

When we feel afraid, uncertain, or not enough, God does not leave us to figure it out alone. Through Jesus, we have the promise of God’s presence, help, courage, and strength.

You may not feel ready.
You may not feel brave.
You may not feel qualified.

But God says: “I will be with you.”

And that promise is enough.

“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ And God said, ‘I will be with you.’” Exodus 3:11–12

If Jesus Says “Go!”

What Would You Tell People to Know?

Jesus tells us:
“Go and make disciples of all nations…”
Matthew 28:19

That can sound like a big job. But sharing Jesus does not mean we have to know everything or have the perfect words.

We can start with what we know:
Jesus loves me.
Jesus forgives me.
Jesus died and rose for me.
Jesus is always with me.
Jesus is preparing heaven for me.

When we learn something good, we naturally want to share it. The good news about Jesus is the best thing we could ever share.

So here’s a simple question: What is one thing you know about Jesus that someone else needs to hear?

And remember, Jesus does not send us out alone. He promises:

“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20

Grace. Love. Fellowship.

Three simple words. Three beautiful gifts from God.

In 2 Corinthians 13:14, Paul writes:
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

You may recognize those words from the end of a worship service. They are often called the apostolic blessing. But they are more than familiar church words. They remind us of what God gives his people every day.

Grace - Jesus gives us forgiveness we could never earn.
Love - God’s love does not quit when we mess up.
Fellowship - The Holy Spirit brings us into God’s family, where we worship, pray, learn, and encourage one another.

The next time you hear those words in church, don’t just think, “Church is over.” Remember what God is giving you:

Grace from Jesus.
Love from the Father.
Fellowship through the Holy Spirit.

Three words worth remembering. Three gifts worth sharing.
