Chukat-Balak (Numbers 19:1-25:9) It Takes So Little To Be Kind: Practice “Chesed”

What a double portion awaits us this week. We begin with a most concerning ritual about a red cow, without blemish, that symbolizes purification and maybe perfection. We review the deaths of Miriam and Aaron and observe the very different reactions and then we move to a portion that stars a talking donkey and the famous “Mah Tovu” blessing by Bilaam....

It’s Getting Late Very Early: Is Social Security On LIfe Support?

Boomers and newly eligible residents in the AARP demographic are being warned of an impending challenge, or, depending on your personality, crisis. Reports in the recent weeks from Social Security have warned that the fund’s ability to pay benefits to elders at the current rates will be depleted by 2032. That is, if my math is right, six years from now....

Korach (Numbers 16:1-18:32) A Rebellion WIth A Cause!

This week we meet the famous story of Korach and his rebellion against the leadership of Moses. This famous story is another in a series of challenges to Moses and Aaron, and, as many suggest, the most serious. God favors Moses, there is a test of firepans which Moses and God win and, as a result, the earth opened and consumed the rebels....

Sh’lach L’cha (Numbers 13:1-15:41) Faith In Your Experience and Trust Your Insincts

This week’s portion raises so many questions. The Israelites are camped by Canaan, and we read this week the story of the spies. Moses sends tribal leaders to scout out the land that they have been promised. As you know, they spend days in the land and return to report. Ten of the twelve speak that the Israelites cannot go into the land as there are so many occupying it, that they seem like giants and we like grasshoppers....

A Todah Rabah To Chaplains

I want to take this space to celebrate a group of clergy who often go unrecognized. Last week I had the honor of participating in the annual convention of Neshama, the National Association of Jewish Chaplains. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with several colleagues that I have not seen for quite some time. Over several days at a hotel in West Palm Beach, Florida, chaplains discussed the challenges and rewards of their calling....
