Thoughts with Pastor Brandon

This morning I was listening to the song “Oceans(Where Feet May Fail) by Hillsong United. And I keep coming back to that line from the bridge of the song. "Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders."

The question I was faced with was, Do I truly trust God without borders? The truth is, most of us don't trust God without borders. We trust Him within them. We say "I trust You, God... but let's keep some savings just in case. I trust you, but I am really comfortable staying right here in my seat. I trust You... but I'm not qualified or educated enough to do that. I trust You... but I'm not forgiving them until they apologize first."

We don't call them what they are…borders. We call them "being responsible." "Being wise." "Having boundaries." And sometimes that's exactly what they are. But sometimes, if we're honest, they're just borders we've built so we never actually have to find out if God comes through. We don’t have to fully, completely, honestly put ourselves in a position that the ONLY OPTION for this to work out is if God comes through. But that’s exactly the place we should be in. That is miracle territory.

So I want to ask you the question I've been asking myself this week:

Where have I quietly drawn a line and told God “I trust you this far, no further"?
- My timeline for that thing I've been praying about for years?
- The comfort in the safety and security of the life that I’ve built?
- The calling I know He's placed on me, that I've talked myself out of because it doesn't make sense on paper?

Here's what I see in Scripture. Abraham didn't get a map. God just said "go to the land I will show you" (Genesis 12:1 NIV), and he went, not knowing where he was going. No border. No backup plan. And that obedience became the foundation of a whole nation, of a promise that's still being fulfilled today.

And there's a widow in 1 Kings 17 who had one handful of flour and a little oil left. Literally enough for one last meal before she expected to die. Elijah asks her to make him bread first, before her and her son. From our human perspective, that's insane. You are giving away your final meal to someone else. From a trust perspective, it's the only thing that made sense. And that flour and oil didn't run out for the rest of the famine. Because she didn’t put a border on her trust.

Notice neither of them had it figured out first. The blessing didn't come before the trust. It came after.

So here's some thoughts for this morning: Borders aren't always bad. Wisdom is real. Discernment is necessary. But some of the borders we've built aren't wisdom. They are just fear or comfort wearing a disguise. And God is not asking us to be reckless. He's asking us to be willing to go where the borders end. To trust Him with our entire heart. With everything that we have. Everything that we are.

What's one border you've put up that God might be asking you to take down?

I'd love to hear it. Drop it in the comments, or just sit with it this week. Let's actually be people whose trust doesn't have a border to it.
