Last night the youth groups watched the movie "The Good Lie" at the UTE. First thank you to our community and the group that manages the UTE for providing an excellent theatre in which to hold events like this and provide good family entertainment for our community.
Secondly the movie. It follows a family, some by blood some by love, who escape from the civil war in Sudan where the Muslims were destroying entire villages and killing all the inhabitants of them. Only the children managed to survive. These children endured a months long journey through the sub-Sharan wilderness without food, water or any means beyond their spirit and intellect to finally reach a refugee camp in Kenya. Hundreds of thousands of these pre-teen children fled their villages and it is estimated that 1 in 3 of them died along the way before reaching the safety of refugee camps. Many more of them died after reaching the camps and more died as young adults due to the strain placed upon their minds and bodies in the sometimes year long trek to safety.
Next week the youth group will use this movie to look at God's plan for immigration in a nation. For how a nation's immigration policies affect the nation's ability to receive and care for refugees as well as its citizens. We will look at what responsible Christian stewardship and love looks like for the neighbors outside our borders as well as our neighbors that are our fellow citizens.
We are asking the youth to reflect on this movie throughout the coming week and bring these reflections to our discussion next week. These are the questions we are asking them.
What does God expect of Christians in regards to refugees?
What means has God supplied the USA to met the needs of refugees?
Are all who seek to come to the USA via immigration refugees?
Do all refugees desire to leave the camps and come to another nation?
Should the USA accept anyone who is a refugee?
