2026 EVERGREEN CEMETERY SPRING CLEANUP NEWS RELEASE

It’s spring cleanup time at the City of Manitowoc’s Evergreen Cemetery. Lot owners are respectfully asked to remove their winter decorations by April 15, 2026. Any items not removed by April 15th will be disposed of by cemetery staff. With over 30,000 graves to maintain, the support of families who observe the cemetery rules is greatly appreciated in order to help maintain Evergreen Cemetery’s park-like beauty.

The cemetery grounds are open for visitors during daylight hours. If you are unable to remove items that you wish to keep by the deadline, contact the cemetery office at [email protected] or leave a message at (920) 686-3570 with your name, your phone number, and the names of the people buried on the gravesites where your items are located. Staff will remove the items for you and store them temporarily. You will need to make an appointment to pick up any items saved inside the building.

Some rules to keep in mind:
• Beginning May 15, 2026, new decorations or flowers may be placed on the gravesites.
• To prevent ruts, do not drive or park on the grass when the ground is soft.
• No perennials or plants which have thorns, thistles, or burs are allowed.
• Annual flowers can be planted in baskets, urns, or in the ground in a flowerbed. Any flower urns not planted for three consecutive years, which are not part of a permanent marker, will be removed.
• The maximum size of a flowerbed is one foot away from the marker and to the width of the marker.
• No fences, above ground edging, gravel, lava stone, shredded bark or similar materials may be placed on gravesites.
• Dirt mounds in the flowerbed or by the marker are not allowed.
• Decorations that are made of glass or other materials that shatters easily are also not allowed.
• Up to two solar lights may be placed at each marker.
• If flags are placed in the ground, the cloth/plastic portion of the flag must be at least 12” above ground level to accommodate lawn mowing equipment. Flags not in metal flag holders should be placed inside a flowerbed or flowerpot to avoid damage.

The complete set of Rules & Regulations can be found on the Pricing & Policies page on the City of Manitowoc website at www.manitowoc.org/evergreencemetery. Search for burial locations using the online Burial Search program at www.manitowoc.org/evergreen.

A reminder to remove your grave decorations before Wednesday, October 1st for fall cleanup! Thank you!

EVERGREEN CEMETERY FALL CLEANUP - 2025

Fall cleanup time is coming to Manitowoc’s Evergreen Cemetery. The Cemetery Division asks your help in clearing all decorations in order to help maintain Evergreen Cemetery’s park-like beauty. Lot owners are respectfully asked to remove their decorations (flowers, statues, etc.) by October 1, 2025. Any items not removed by October 1st will be disposed of by cemetery staff, and any perennials found on gravesites will be cut down to ground level. With approximately 30,000 graves to maintain, the support of families who observe the cemetery rules is greatly appreciated.

Winter decorations should not be placed until November 15, 2025. Decorations should be kept close to the marker, so as to minimize damage from snow blowing for a grave opening in the nearby area. During winter months, artificial flowers should be put in a container instead of being placed into the ground.

The complete set of Rules & Regulations can be found on the Pricing & Policies page of the website by visiting www.manitowoc.org/evergreencemetery. To locate gravesites, visit www.manitowoc.org/evergreen to access an online Burial Search program.

Happy Arbor Day! Did you know that Evergreen Cemetery has small tree farms for the purpose of growing trees to be planted at the cemetery? The photos show a tree farm area at the cemetery from 2021 and a tree from a cemetery tree farm being planted this week.

Due to the number of ash trees and other dying trees that had to be removed in recent years, it will take a number of years to fill the void. Cemetery staff hope to purchase some additional, more mature trees later this year, and in Spring of 2026, they are planning to plant a large amount of different types of oak trees from the tree farms. If you are interested in donating a tree in memory of a loved one, please visit https://www.manitowoc.org/432/Tree-Donation-Program .
