The pole beans are making an appearance! When growing conditions are good, the plants pop up quickly. It's been chilly so far, and not enough rain, so they're coming up slowly and somewhat spotty. We've planted 3 pole bean towers 1 week apart for a more consistent supply of beans. This little sprout looks happy enough, the dried grass will need to be shifted so the green grass growing through it can be weeded out.

Before and after. Planting onions started from seed. The Robinsons had quite a chore separating and planting all these onions. The seeds were from 2010 and germinated extraordinarily well! Thank you Al and Linda for your willingness to help with a joy that is felt by all.

Weekly garden update, it was chilly and windy today, and we may need prayers to keep the 30 new tomato plants from getting too cold tonight. 1/2 row of Maxibel French Filet bush beans were planted because picking the full row is a lot. The other half will be planted in about 2 weeks.. One of the pole bean towers was also planted with Fortex French fillet pole beans. The French filet beans don't get such a large bean seed forming inside too early. Love em! In the video you will see the installation of an arch to grow cucumbers, it's about a 5-ft wide section, and a second arch to try out some snap peas.

Another busy bee in Lakeshore UMC Community Garden, any idea what farmer Andy will be planting in this bed?

A busy bee in Lakeshore UMC Community Garden. Those early "weeds" are a treat for our hardest working garden committee members!

It may not look like it, but there are 68 tomato plants on this tray, each one needs to be transplanted and buried up to their first leaves so they can form a sturdy root system before hardening them off and then planting them outside in the big wild world. Also started squash, cucumbers and a second planting of kohlrabi so there's a steady supply. Now, if it would just stop snowing we could put some plants in the garden! What a joy to be gardening even though it's a bit chilly outside!

Planning the garden starts early! Master gardener Paula Snyder came to us from the UW Extension and gave us a few ideas about the low soggy spot, planting successive crops in one gardening season, how to deal with those annoying beetles beginning with our lawn, and a little look at the apple trees. So many great ideas to garden organically and gently. Thank you Paula for all the great information!!! Submitted by gardener Joni Shavlik
