Hey Sacred Heart & St. Mary on the Lake family, today is Flag Day, so what better time to reflect upon the significance of Vatican City's flag, also known as the flag of the Holy See? YELLOW AND WHITE: The yellow (or gold) symbolizes heavenly power, while white (or silver) symbolizes earthly authority. PAPAL TIARA: A sign of the Pope's sovereignty; the tiara depicted was worn by Pope Pius XI. TWO KEYS: Representing the Keys to the Kingdom given to St. Peter by Christ; again, gold symbolizes spiritual authority, while the silver key indicates temporal power. RED CORD: A cord connects the two keys, showing how they are linked, and both are possessed by the successor to Peter.

READ: WHAT CAUSES HEAVEN TO CELEBRATE? by PETE BURAK: In the latest edition of FAITH Magazine, the popular Catholic speaker and writer, Pete Burak, asks a simple question: What causes heaven to celebrate? Pete is the director of i.d.9:16, the young adult outreach of Renewal Ministries based in Ann Arbor where he is a parishioner at Christ the King. Pete writes; “You can tell a lot about someone by examining what or who they celebrate. For instance, around 3:30 p.m. on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my family began celebrating a long desired and often unexpected outcome (think football). Here’s another hint: I’m from the state of Michigan and most people from Ohio were not celebrating; this gives you a glimpse into one of the things my family loves the most.” “What causes heaven to celebrate? When does God throw a party? These are important questions because we want to be sure to rejoice over the things God rejoices in and, conversely, we shouldn’t want to revel in anything he doesn’t.” “We get many glimpses of heaven throughout the Scriptures which allow us to enjoy a foretaste of what is to come. For example, when Jesus was born, we experienced the angels in full array worshiping God and celebrating the birth of our Savior. That was a specific moment in human history, but a simple parable from Jesus offers us a peek into an ongoing source of joy for heaven.” “In the parable of the lost coin (Lk 15:8-10), a woman loses one of her 10 silver coins. She lights a lamp, sweeps the floor and searches carefully until she finds it. She excitedly invites her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her because what was lost has now been found. Jesus then explains, “In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Think about this: Someone coming to faith, turning toward God, and receiving his love and mercy sets off rejoicing in heaven. Notice Jesus doesn’t say 100 people, or 1,000 conversions, lead to this reaction, but just one. That’s how unfathomably and eternally important each individual person is to God.” “I don’t know of any other passage that so concretely connects something happening on earth with heaven’s reaction. Signs and wonders are awesome and important, but don’t prompt a heavenly party. Heroic preaching is essential, but that alone doesn’t cause the angels to get out the streamers. In this parable, Jesus reveals to us the ultimate and most important desire of God’s heart: to know, love, heal, save, forgive and redeem us. Those in heaven eagerly await repentance and decisions based on faith because they know that our repeated and faithful response to God’s grace will lead us to one day enjoying the joy and fulfillment found only in the heavenly kingdom. We are infinitely more valuable than a silver coin, and Jesus doesn’t stop sweeping and searching until he finds us and we say yes to him!”

READ: REFLECTION UPON A GOOD DAD by BISHOP BOYEA: Earlier this year, Bishop Earl Boyea’s mother, Helen, died at the age of 92. May she rest in peace. As we approach Father’s Day this month, Bishop Boyea now reflects upon his own father, Earl, as he adjusts to widowhood after 72 years of marriage. Bishop Boyea writes:"While mom was very ordered about everything, including her quilts, dad has always had the vivid imagination. He can see a turtle climbing up a tree when it is simply a burl! Perhaps he is the source of the artistic sense of many in our family. Nonetheless, on a walk in the woods you will be presented with many critters which are not really there!" "Still, dad has always been down to earth. He taught all of us to change our oil and tires and basic car maintenance. We are all able to do basic repairs around the home. If we don’t know how, we ask someone and then do it ourselves. It seemed that nearly every evening dad was working on the clothes washer; after so many cycles, it needed constant attention. We had to know the names of tools because when asked, should we hand him the wrong one, his ire was up." "I never cared much for sitting in a boat fishing. Perhaps I was too antsy for that. Yet, those blue gills were not obtained in any other way. My favorite was the few times dad took us stream fishing and we walked in the swollen rivers. That kind of movement entertained me at least until the waders were filled with water, cold water. Maybe, that is why it ended up only being a few times." "Dad is a reader and he passed that on to the rest of us. His incredible gift is able to be able to tune out all the chaos around him and focus on his latest western. Most of that attentiveness is now given to reruns on the TV." "Gardening, being raised on a farm, was tilled into him and I am sure he will plant some tomatoes this year in addition to his growing garlic. We nearly always had dogs, even those which would snip at us. They never did so to dad or mom, for that matter. Our favorite was Socs, short for Socrates, even though that beagle was a she! His rabbits were his worst investment. Hoping to serve as a good meal, they were all named by us and thus lost their appeal as a main course." "But dad’s greatest gift was his sacrificial and generous service of his wife and family as he worked hard to support us, encouraged our independence, created wonderful camping trips, acted as the “unbiased” pitcher at our neighborhood baseball games, and without fail took us to Church every Sunday." "Never very expressive about his emotions, it was we his sons and daughters who taught him to say, “I love you,” because we kept saying it to him." "So, dad, Happy Father’s Day, and I love you. I can hear it being returned!"

READ: DIOCESE CONSIDERS NEW CATHOLIC EDUCATION FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN: The Diocese of Lansing is considering embarking upon a major new fundraising campaign in support of Catholic education – all with the aim of fostering a new generation of missionary disciples capable of bringing the light, and warmth, of Christ’s Gospel into contemporary society. “Culturally we live in endarked times with both faith and reason under ongoing assault with the result being a public square increasingly dominated by impiety, impurity, intemperance and, indeed, ignorance – our world needs Jesus and Jesus needs saints,” explains Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing. “A major part of delivering upon that bold apostolic ambition lies with Catholic education and, especially, our Catholic schools as the world needs them to be places where the next generation is formed in virtue, learning and holiness.” Over the past two years Catholic schools within the Diocese of Lansing have experienced a historically significant increase in enrollment. Any new fundraising campaign seeks to build upon that success in order to make Catholic schools ever more accessible, affordable, available and, most importantly, on-mission. With this in mind, the Diocese of Lansing recently partnered with consultants from the Steier Group, a Catholic fundraising and development firm, to test the feasibility and potential support for a capital campaign for Catholic schools within the diocese. The study was conducted from January through March 2023, with a total of 941 participants. This sample group included pastors, parish staff, diocesan officials, as well as school presidents and principals. Two themes consistently emerged from respondents: First, support for a capital campaign for Catholic schools was consistently strong across all respondents regardless of their region, deanery, or whether they belong to parishes with or without schools. Second, many respondents also commented that the focus of any potential fundraising initiative should be broadened to allow for support of religious education and/or faith formation initiatives. Based upon this feedback, the Steier Group broadened the scope of the potential campaign from Catholic schools to Catholic education while keeping the primary focus on strengthening our Catholic schools. Last month, the Steier Group presented its findings and recommendations to Bishop Boyea and the key bodies he consults with: The Bishop’s Cabinet; the Diocesan Finance Council; the Diocesan College of Consultors; and members of the Presbyteral Council. Having taken on board the constructive comments and suggestions voiced during the study, the Diocesan Finance Council and the College of Consultors voted to move forward with a major fundraising initiative in support of Catholic education as recommended by the Steier Group. That decision was then endorsed by Bishop Boyea. “There is still much prayer, work and study to be done before any campaign is launched,” concludes Bishop Boyea. “We will, of course, keep our clergy and lay faithful fully informed at every stage, especially through the pages of FAITH Magazine.”
