Today, June, 11, the newly-elected Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Saint Nektarios in Roscoe, New York, the Reverend Hieromonk Stephanos, visited the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in New York in order to formally offer his respects to His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros and to receive his paternal blessing as he prepares to undertake the sacred responsibility entrusted to him by the brotherhood of the Monastery.

Accompanying the newly elected Abbot were the Reverend Deacon Chrysostomos and Brother Epiphanios, members of the monastic brotherhood of the Monastery.

During the meeting, which took place in a spirit of filial love and ecclesiastical unity, Archbishop Elpidophoros warmly welcomed Fr. Stephanos and conveyed, once again, his paternal joy and satisfaction at the prayerful decision of the brotherhood following the repose of the ever-memorable Elder Joseph. His Eminence offered words of encouragement and spiritual counsel, emphasizing the importance of humility, discernment, obedience, joy, and unconditional love in the ministry of an abbot.

Today we celebrate the Nameday of our spiritual father, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Archbishop of Constantinople–New Rome.

May he enjoy long life, the most excellent health, and be granted the strength of the Holy Spirit to continue his Patriarchy for the good estate of the Church, and for the benefit of the world.

On this day of his Patronal Feast, and every day, let us extol him and say: Many Years!

On this great Feast of Pentecost, I give thanks to God for the blessing of completing a pilgrimage with the graduating seniors of our beloved Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, a journey that began at the Sacred Center of Orthodoxy, our Mother Church of Constantinople, with the paternal blessing of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and continued to the Holy Mountain of Athos and the historic city of Thessaloniki.

Spending these days together with our students has been a profound joy and source of hope. To witness their faith, devotion, and commitment to the ministry that lies before them is a clear indication that the future of our Sacred Archdiocese is bright. Through their encounter with the spiritual heritage of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the living tradition of Orthodoxy, they have been strengthened and inspired as they prepare to take the next steps in service to the people of God.

As we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, I pray that the same Spirit may enlighten and strengthen them, guiding them in faithful service to Christ and His Holy Church, always in devotion to the Mother Church and her sacred mission in the world.

In preparing to return to the United States, I give glory to almighty God for my good health and offer my blessing and encouragement to our students, who will remain in Greece for several more weeks of study.

On this Memorial Day, we pause in reverence and gratitude, lifting our hearts in prayer for those who gave their lives so that others live in freedom. As Americans and as Orthodox Christians, we are called to honor their sacrifice not only with words, but with lives worthy of the gift they gave. May the Lord grant them eternal rest in His Kingdom, and may their courage and selflessness guide us. Memory Eternal.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Greek American leaders, and members of the Greek American Community at Gracie Mansion on May 5, 2026, for a reception marking Greek Independence Day.

In his remarks, His Eminence expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mayor Mamdani for his “personal, and the City’s recognition, of this National Holiday of Greek People around the world.” “The Hellenes of New York City,” His Eminence continued, “deeply appreciate your familiarity with our community, and with the way you have embraced our traditions – religious and civic.”

The annual gathering at Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence of New York City, brought together civic officials, diplomats, clergy, educators, organizational leaders and representatives of the Omogeneia for a celebration of the 205th anniversary of the beginning of Greece’s struggle for independence in 1821.

Archbishop Elpidophoros described Greek Independence Day as both a national and spiritual commemoration, rooted in the history of March 25, 1821, and the Feast of the Annunciation: “The Immortal Heroes of 1821 fought for and gained this liberty and paved the way for the Democracy that Greece and Cyprus know today – a legacy from the patrimony of our ancient Hellenic roots, just one of our gifts to the world,” Archbishop Elpidophoros said.

The Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity on East 74th Street was filled Sunday morning for the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and the Doxology marking Greek Independence Day. His Eminence Metropolitan Ieronymos of Kalavryta and Aigialeia presided over the Liturgy, arriving from one of the regions most closely bound to the events of 1821. Archbishop Elpidophoros of America officiated at the Doxology.

Among those in attendance was Nikitas M. Kaklamanis, President of the Hellenic Parliament, whose presence recalled the 2008 visit of Dimitris Sioufas, then President of the Hellenic Parliament, who came to New York as Grand Marshal of the Greek Independence Day Parade. Also in attendance was Mayor Mamdani, whom His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros thanked as the first sitting mayor of New York City known to have attended the parade-day Doxology at Holy Trinity.
