In 1 Samuel 3, we hear a scriptural lesson we would do well to heed today. In the silence of the night, the young Samuel hears a voice calling to him, a call he did not initially recognize as the Lordโ€™s.

It takes the elder Eli, a man of experience and humility, to listen and help the boy discern that God was indeed speaking.

In my years of episcopal ministry, I have come to realize that we bishops are called to be like Eli.

The bishopโ€™s charism is not merely to dictate, but to discern. Like Eli, we must be servants of the Word that is already speaking in the hearts of the faithful.

As bishops, we sometimes assume we are the only teachers, but as the Synod on Synodality has reminded us, we are co-responsible with the laity for the life of the church.

Pope Francis said as much on the 50th anniversary of the Synod of Bishops:

I recently attended a meeting in Racine, Wis., organized by New Ways Ministry, where I saw the scriptural dynamic between Eli and Samuel come to life.

At this meeting, bishops encountered and dialogued with theologians, pastoral workers and LGBTQ persons.

This time together deepened my pastoral concern, understanding and right judgment about the lives of LGBTQ Catholics.

Throughout our dialogue in Racine, I was struck by the urgent need for the church to develop a pastoral approach that more compassionately listens to the needs of the people of God today.

As a church, I fear we are not drawing near enough to our LGBTQ brothers and sisters; we are not moving forward together on the same journey.

This is especially true when it comes to the experiences of our transgender and nonbinary people, many of whom feel we approach them with suspicion and hostility.

There is a persistent tendency in our discourse to seek simple, categorical answers for what are, in reality, deeply complex and personal human journeys.

- Archbishop Lefebvre, Homily of June 30, 1988 in ร‰cรดne.

The purpose of episcopal consecration is to transmit within the Church the power that souls so desperately need; and this power is described by Archbishop Lefebvre, following St. Paul, as that of a father. It is in the image of the power of God, who brings souls to the life of grace.

It is the power to transmit life, and that is why depriving the Church of this power is tantamount to drying up the very sources of life within her, by depriving her of fatherhood.

A church without bishops is a church without fathers, a church of orphans, a church without a future, a church incapable of reproducing itself and condemned to disappear. Just as society needs fathers, so does the Church.

We can then understand why the consecration of June 30, 1988 was the "survival operation" of Tradition.

It is the operation that prevents the principle of life from disappearing.

The word "bishop" can be understood in two senses: either as one who possesses the power of Holy Orders or as one who possesses the power of jurisdiction.

The power of Holy Orders is the power to sanctify, that is, the power to celebrate Mass, administer the sacraments, and give blessings.

The power of jurisdiction is the power to govern and teach with authority.

The Church is composed of a single hierarchy, a single set of leaders, but whose members are invested with two distinct powers. The 1917 Code of Canon Law states this clearly in paragraph 3 of canon 108:

And canon 109 further clarifies this distinction, indicating that there is a difference in the way in which powers are acquired:

Those who are admitted into the ecclesiastical hierarchy are constituted in the degrees of the power of order by holy ordination; [the pope is established] in the sovereign pontificate, directly by divine right, by means of legitimate election and acceptance of the election; [the bishops are established] in the other degrees of jurisdiction, by canonical mission.

The existence of these two powers is necessary for the Church, and it cannot be questioned without threatening the Church's very life.

Indeed, these two powers are the two sources of life in the Church.

They therefore represent the fatherhood of Christ.

The head of the Spanish Bishopsโ€™ Conference has de facto rejected the substance of Pope Francisโ€™ Amoris Laetitia, writing that Holy Communion is not permitted for married people now living in new relationships.

Issuing a pastoral letter on June 1, to mark the upcoming feast of Corpus Christi, Archbishop Luis Argรผello outlined certain instances in which reception of Holy Communion were not to take place.

The Spanish prelateโ€™s letter comes by way of a rare intervention into the issue of who should receive Holy Communion. Not that the Church is unclear on this, but more that Her traditional teaching is often ignored. Argรผello wrote:

โ€œThese people,โ€ added the Archbishop of Valladolid, โ€œwho continue to be part of the Church, must know that this breach of the Sacrament of the Covenant prevents Eucharistic communion; they may participate in the celebration, as well as in the life of the Church in many ways, but receiving Holy Communion is not possible.โ€

06/03/2026

Perhaps the most debated dogma within the Catholic Church today is the teaching that โ€œoutside the Church there is no salvation.โ€

In Latin, that is Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (EENS.)

Even though Iโ€™m no huge fan of the new Catechism, even that CCC has a whole section titled โ€œoutside the Church there is no salvation,โ€ in which the ancient teaching is upheld (albeit with excessive nuances) beginning in CCC 845.

Of course, 19 centuries of real teaching of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus was exponentially stronger.

But today, I find the two groups of solid Christians who either promote or oppose Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus (EENS) have the same warped idea of what it means.

Let me give the analogy I created:
Imagine the Catholic Church as an ocean-liner or cruise ship. Jesus is walking around the outside balcony or the veranda of the enormous cruise liner, checking everyoneโ€™s tickets to see if he or she is a card-carrying member of the Catholic Church. If the guest has such a ticket, he is saved. If not, well, Christ throws you into the ocean.

โ€œOutside the Church, thereโ€™s no salvation.โ€

But that analogy is misleading because it doesnโ€™t take into consideration the reality of Original Sin as the status quo of humanity.

So, hereโ€™s my true analogy of EENS:
The Catholic Church is indeed a huge ocean-liner or cruise-ship (just like the original analogy above.) Jesus Christ is still the Captain of Our Faith, walking the veranda (also the exact same as the above analogy.)

However, hereโ€™s the big difference in my second and more theologically-accurate analogy: Every single person already starts their life in the ocean of Original Sin.

Not only is every pagan born in that horrible ocean of darkness and danger, but even every baby born to Catholic parents are born in that ocean of Original Sin.

Why?

Because that baby born even to Catholic parents has not been baptized yet. Hence, it is born in the dark ocean of sin. The ocean is status quo, not an arbitrary punishment for not being a part of a weird club of tall hat-wearers.

Yet we have a Savior: Jesus Christ is walking the balcony of His Church, throwing life-preservers (the sacraments) to each and every person who will grasp it and willingly be brought into the Catholic Church for salvation.

Clearly, this second analogy defends the goodness of God Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.โ€”1 Tim 2:4.

When you look at it like this, you understand EENS is not about being an arbitrary card-carrying member of a certain culture, as much as it is about holding to the ancient faith and sacraments.

This is what Christ gave for salvation from the devil who manipulates every culture.

Cardinal Walter Kasper warned the German Catholic Church against arrogant attempts to convince other parts of the Church...
06/02/2026

Cardinal Walter Kasper warned the German Catholic Church against arrogant attempts to convince other parts of the Church of their initiatives for reform amid a โ€œcrisis of Godโ€ in Europe.

During a conference titled โ€œGod in Todayโ€™s Worldโ€ organized by the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Kasper, the former bishop of the diocese, addressed attempts by the German Catholic episcopate to lecture other parts of the universal Church on their reform ideas.

Individuals must not try to โ€œdictate the course of action,โ€ Kasper said last week in Stuttgart. โ€œThat would be the best way to make oneself unpopular around the world.โ€

Advice along the lines of โ€œWeโ€™ll tell you how to proceedโ€ is no longer accepted by โ€œanyone, including in Africa, today,โ€ said the cardinal, a former member of the Roman Curia.

โ€œIn Germany, we are currently in the midst of a deep crisis.โ€ The 93-year-old criticized a โ€œpessimism and skepticism that has become so common in Germany.โ€

In Africa, on the other hand, Christianity is growing, Kasper observed. He said that there are now more Catholics in Africa than in all of Europe, where a โ€œcrisis of Godโ€ prevails.

โ€œThis crisis is a unique phenomenon in Europe,โ€ Kasper asserted.

The German cardinal called for placing the proclamation of faith in God at the center of the Churchโ€™s work.

Referring to the Enlightenment of the 18th century, Kasper stated, โ€œAn enlightenment of the Enlightenment is necessary and is already underway.โ€ Especially in France, the country of the Enlightenment, there are currently signs of a Christian revival, he said.

Kasper, although progressively liberal himself on such things as divorce and โ€œremarriage,โ€ being the architect behind the proposals in Amoris Laetitia and member of the infamous St. Gallen Mafia, has been critical of the heretical German Synodal Way in the past.

In 2022, he criticized the German bishops for planning to set up a โ€œsynodal councilโ€ that would give governing power to lay people.

Would Bishop Peter Collins of East Anglia bow his head to receive a blessing from an SSPX bishop?

Of course not.

One can almost hear the press release already: concern for ecclesial communion, anguish over irregular status, fidelity to the successor of Peter, the grave wound of schism, and all the usual incense poured over cowardice.

Rome can always find a canon when tradition is involved. The bureaucracy has a whole drawer full of them.

Yet the same hierarchy manages to find smiles, warmth, mutual presence, shared witness, and โ€œfriendshipโ€ when the other party is Anglican.

At Walsingham, Collinsโ€™ own diocesan diary listed him as attending the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham pilgrimage on May 25 at 11:30.

The Anglican pilgrimage program listed the 12 noon โ€œSolemn Massโ€ with Luke Irvine-Capel, the Anglican โ€œBishop of Richborough,โ€ as principal celebrant, followed by a sermon, procession, and Benediction preached by John Wilson, the Catholic Archbishop of Southwark.

Even leaving aside the circulating photograph of Collins bowing for the Anglican blessing, the verified record is already damning enough.

A Catholic bishop attended a public Anglican shrine event centered around an invalid Eucharistic rite, presided over by a man styled as a bishop in a communion whose orders Leo XIII declared invalid.

The ecumenical write-up even found it โ€œparticularly strikingโ€ that an Anglican bishop presided at the principal Eucharistic celebration while a Catholic archbishop preached later in the day.

Collins was named among the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox church leaders present.

โ€œParticularly strikingโ€ is one way to put it.

Another way: the Conciliar Church now treats sacramental fraud as fellowship while treating Catholic tradition as a biohazard.
..

Catholics used to understand this without needing a committee, a synodal listening session, or a pastoral accompaniment worksheet.

Leo XIIIโ€™s Apostolicae Curae judged ordinations according to the Anglican rite to be invalid due to defect of form and intention, and declared them โ€œutterly null and absolutely void.โ€

The Latin text states that ordinations performed according to the Anglican rite โ€œhave been and are completely void and absolutely null.โ€

That means an Anglican โ€œbishop,โ€ however ornate his vestments, is not a bishop in the Catholic sacramental sense.

He is not a successor of the Apostles.

He cannot ordain.

He cannot offer the Holy Sacrifice.

He cannot give an episcopal blessing because he does not possess the episcopate.

So imagine the absurdity. A Catholic bishop will not publicly honor a validly consecrated traditional bishop whose only real crime is refusing the revolution of Vatican II.

Yet he can appear comfortably at a ceremony where an Anglican layman, dressed as a bishop, presides over what Catholics must regard as an invalid Eucharistic rite.

That is the whole crisis in miniature.

The revolution in the Catholic Church is more widely recognised than ever, and as two books written about it reveal, the only real questions are: when it began, and whether you are for or against it.

I have been reading two books about Synodality, one from the SSPX - and one from within the Holy See. If you are interested in the crisis in the Church today, I would strongly recommend you read them both.

Every week on Faith and Reason I have to talk about some fresh enormity or other coming out of the modern Church.

We have all seen the many effects of this crisis, from declining mass attendance, the decline in the belief of the Real Presence, and the defection of the modern Church from Catholic doctrine in its rush to welcome the spirit of the modern liberal age.

Reading these two books has helped me to understand what is going on. They have given me a remarkable information picture about what is happening, why it is happening, who is doing it, and what we should do about it. They have also shown me that the counter-revolution is not restricted to religious extremists like me.

In fact, it seems everyone who really believes in Christ and in His Church is beginning to realise the revolution is here, and it is here to replace both Him and the religion He gave us.

Our lives are full of trash today and I think we should take care to only spend our time on things which truly deserve it, as our time is not limitless, and how we spend it shapes who we are.

If we are to be equal to the task of the defence of Christ, His message and His Church, here are two takes on Synodality which will not waste your time on earth but enrich it.

Each will help to arm the Christian soldier in this most heroic of battles.

Francis spoke frequently during his pontificate of the spirit, but was he always referring to the Holy Spirit?

One of his favorite expressions was to โ€œlet the spirit guide us.โ€

But what spirit, exactly?

The spirit of fraternity?

The spirit of environmentalism?

The spirit of discernment, of listening and walking together?

The spirit of caring for our common home?

From the beginning of his tenure as pope (and many regard him not as a true pope but a heretic, usurper and antipope), Francisโ€™ one abiding purpose was to proclaim the spirit of synodality as the new way, almost a new gospel.

The word โ€œsynodalityโ€ had not even been heard of prior to Francis.

Indeed, the term was never heard of in the Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council.

Synod, yes.

But synod โ€“ a small council of Christian leaders, often bishops โ€“ and synodality (the word does not even show up in the dictionary) are not the same thing โ€“ not even close โ€“ although their roots derive from the Greek โ€œsyn-hodosโ€ meaning roughly the same path taken.

Synodality is something new, a construct manufactured and put in place by certain nefarious men who surreptitiously obtained admittance into the deepest labyrinths of the Church for the express purpose to destabilize and weaken her doctrines and to shine a worldly light devoid of Christ upon her.

This vision was brought to full fruition by the puppet pope, Mario Jorge Bergoglio, known as Francis I, and now fostered with utmost care by his successor, Robert Prevost, Leo XIV.

Thus, a new church born of the meaning of this new construct was created, itโ€™s PR campaign the rallying call of its meaning, โ€œjourneying together.โ€

Under the stolen auspices of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ, this synodal new temple welcomes all (so long as they put down their arms of tradition and conform completely to the new way), walking with all and condemning no one (except, of course, those traditional souls who follow the True Church of Jesus Christ).

There is no place for sin in this counterfeit church. What was once considered evil is now called good, what was once good is now evil; what was once anathema in the eyes of God is now welcomed with cries of joy and open arms.

There is no longer One, Supreme, Infinitely Perfect, Eternal, Self-Existing God, the Creator of Heaven and earth and of all things.

Now, according to synodality, we are free to believe in and follow multiple gods and demigods as we choose.

All religions โ€“ including paganism and atheism โ€“ are one in unity with dialogue, listening, and discerning one another.

No longer are the four marks of the True Church of Christ โ€“ one, holy, catholic, and apostolic โ€“ recognized in this new church of the infernal but it has new marks to proclaim, according to the Archbishop of the Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Tobago and Antilles: relating, listening, discerning, self-emptying.

In this new church, participants dance and party around a communal meal like there is no Second Coming.

No one wants to hear about sacrifice or being accountable for personal sin. Here, there is no judgment, no shame.

Offing a baby in the womb is perfectly alright as well as changing oneโ€™s gender like a new suit of clothes, so long as the individualโ€™s rights are preserved.

One of the worst vices known to man and that cries out to heaven for justice is now deemed a โ€œbeautiful gift from Godโ€ (which god, you might well ask?).

The poster boy of so**my, himself, Father James Martin, has made it his vocation to preach on the positives of homosexuality and to push to have it, not only accepted by the Catholic Church, but raised to the status of a sacrament.

At last, he may get his wish in this new church of synodality. Youโ€™ll find his prints all over the Synodal Study Group No. 9 document.

With such staunch advocates as Francis and now Leo, he is assured of a high position in this satanic temple.

Pope Leo XIV on Thursday met in a private audience with radical Chicago Democratic mayor Brandon Johnson, during which they reportedly discussed ICE raids in the city, slavery reparations, and the Iran war, but not key moral issues such as abortion and LGBT ideology, both of which Johnson supports.

While the Vatican has not disclosed what was discussed during the May 28 meeting, Johnson, a far-left Protestant, claimed during a press conference following the audience that the pair discussed President Donald Trumpโ€™s immigration policy and other concerns associated with the left.

The mayor of Pope Leoโ€™s native city offered no indication that the pontiff had discussed abortion or the LGBT agenda.

During the meeting, Johnsonโ€™s delegation joined Leo in a โ€œmulti-faithโ€ prayer and invited the pope to visit his native city and celebrate Mass at Grant Park.

The mayor told reporters that Leoโ€™s โ€œposition around Trump was more about disagreement with his approach.โ€

โ€œThe Pope wanted to know how ICE impacted our city and whether there were still examples of ICE raids happening in our city,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œI talked about how our rapid response community team came together to support familiesโ€ฆ. I talked about my executive orders, for which he was very gracious and encouraging, especially those I signed to protect the people of Chicago.โ€

Johnsonโ€™s executive orders also include one about so-called โ€œviolence against transgender women,โ€ i.e., gender-confused men.

The mayor has a radically pro-abortion and pro-LGBT record, previously pledging to offer free abortion pills and to prosecute pro-life sidewalk counselors.

He additionally commemorated โ€œNational Abortion Provider Appreciation Dayโ€ in 2024.

โ€œWe commend the bravery and resilience of abortion providers and look forward to continuing to support their efforts to ensure that reproductive rights are upheld and respected,โ€ Johnson said at the time. โ€œTogether, we can resist attempts to roll back the progress we have made, ensuring Chicago remains a sanctuary for choice.โ€

Moreover, the mayorโ€™s team vowed to decrease the use of law enforcement against those who identify as โ€œLGBT,โ€ pledging โ€œ[n]o disparity in arrests between [so-called] LGBTQ+ and cisgender heterosexual populations, decreasing interactions with police,โ€ and ending alleged โ€œpolice harassment and neglectโ€ toward gender-confused and homosexual people.

by Rev. Irenaeus Schoenherr, O.F.M.

God has always dealt with men in a way consonant with their nature--by drawing them to His Holy Will by promises of reward.

It was so with His dealings with the chosen people under the Old Dispensation. It was the way of Christ in the New, promising even a hundredfold return for compliance with His desires.

And so it is in the history of the revelation and propagation of the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

"That men might more readily respond to that wonderful and overflowing desire of love," wrote Leo XIII in his Encyclical Annum Sacrum (1899) on the devotion, "Jesus, by the promise of rich rewards, called and drew all men to Him."

St. Margaret Mary in her writings insists again and again on the ardent desire of Christ to pour out blessings with a royal generosity on those who would honor His Divine Heart and return Him love for love.

These Promises of the Sacred Heart, in the form in which they are now popularly known and approved by the Church, far surpass in variety, universality and importance those attached to any other exercises of devotion in the Church.

They are addressed to all sorts of persons: to the fervent, the tepid, and the sinful.

They embrace every condition of life: priests, religious, and seculars.

They promise relief to the afflicted, strength to the tempted, consolation to the sorrowful, peace to the family, blessings in the home, success in our enterprises, mercy to the sinner, high sanctity to fervent souls, courage to the cold of heart.

They promise power to the priest to soften the hardest hearts.

They promise strength and courage on our death-bed, and tell us of the priceless gift of final perseverance and of a refuge in the Heart of Christ at the last moment.

What greater or more valuable favors than these could even the omnipotent and boundless love and goodness of the Sacred Heart bestow on us?

These Promises help us to an understanding of the truth of St. Margaret Mary's glowing words: "Jesus showed me how this devotion is, as it were, the final effort of His love, the last invention of His boundless Charity."

The duties of our daily life are numerous and often difficult.

God grants us in response to prayer and frequent reception of the Sacraments all the necessary graces for our state of life.

There are also extraordinary graces which lie outside the usual action of God's Providence, graces that He gives to His special friends.

These are more efficacious graces, more plentifully given to the clients of the Sacred Heart.

It was the first thing the Angels wished to men at the birth of Jesus.

In the Heart of Jesus will be found the true peace, that makes the home the reflex and anticipation of our heavenly Home.

The desire to comfort the sorrowful is the mark of a noble and kind heart. The Sacred Heart is the most noble and generous of hearts, both human and divine.

How does He console us?

Not necessarily by freeing us from sorrow and affliction. He knows the priceless value of the cross--that we have sins to expiate.

By His grace, He makes what is painful tolerable. "I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our troubles." (2 Cor. 7, 4)

"One of the soldiers opened His side with a lance, and immediately there came out blood and water." (John 19, 34)

Christ's side was opened to show that Divine Providence wished all men to find in His Divine Heart an assured refuge against the enemies of our salvation.

In His Heart we can find protection, strength in our frailty, perseverance in our inconstancy, assured refuge in the dangers and toils of life, and at the hour of death.

The Redemption is the immortal drama of God's mercy; and our Divine Redeemer is, as it were, God's Mercy Incarnate. "With the Lord is kindness and with Him plenteous Redemption." (Ps. 129, 7)

Now in His glorified humanity in heaven Jesus continues to show forth His boundless mercy, "always living to make intercession for us." (Heb. 7,25)

Lukewarmness is a languid dying state of the soul that has lost its interest in religion. The Holy Spirit expresses deep disgust for such a soul: "You are neither cold nor hot ... I am about to vomit you out of My mouth." (Apoc. 3, 15)

The only remedy for it is devotion to the Sacred Heart, Who came "to cast fire on earth," i.e., to inspire the cold and tepid heart with new fear and love of God.

High perfection is the reward that Christ bestows on the fervent clients of His Divine Heart; for this devotion has, as its special fruit, to transform us into a close resemblance to our Blessed Lord.

This is done by kindling in our hearts the fire of divine love, which, as St. Paul says, "is the bond of perfection." (Col. 3, 14)

Through devotion to the Sacred Heart self-love will give way to an ardent zeal for His interests.

Religious pictures are a powerful appeal and inspiration.

The Sacred Heart is an open book wherein we may read the infinite love of Jesus for us in His Passion and Death.

He shows us His Heart, cut open by the lance, all aglow like a fiery furnace of love, whose flames appear bursting forth from the top.

It is encircled with thorns, the anguishing smarts of unheeded love. May it ever impel us to acts of love and generosity.

The conversion of a sinner calls sometimes for extraordinary graces. God never forces the free will of a human being.

But He can give actual graces with which He forsees the sinner will overcome the resisting attitude of the most obstinate sinful soul.

This, then, is what occurs in the case of priests who are animated with great devotion to the Sacred Heart.

This Promise holds out to promoters of devotion to the Sacred Heart a wonderful reward--they "shall have their names written in My Heart."

These words imply a strong and faithful friendship of Christ Himself, and present to us "the Book of Life" of St. John: "I will not blot his name out of the book of life." (Apoc. 3, 5)

This Promise contains a great reward, which is nothing less than heaven.

"Final perseverance is a gratuitous gift of God's goodness, and cannot be merited as an acquired right by any individual act of ours." (Council of Trent)

It is given as the reward for a series of acts continued to the end: "He who has persevered to the end will be saved." (Matt. 10, 22)
