The Church commemorates the Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul on June 29.

Peter was a fisherman by trade. One day, while he and his brother Andrew were casting their nets into the sea, Jesus called them, saying, "Follow Me." Immediately they left their nets and followed Him as His disciples (Matt. 4:18–20). Paul, on the other hand, was a Pharisee, thoroughly trained in the Law of Moses and zealous for the traditions of his fathers. While traveling to Damascus to persecute Christians, a light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. Jesus said, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" Through this gracious encounter, the Lord converted Paul from unbelief to faith in Christ. From that day forward, Paul devoted his life to proclaiming Jesus as the one and only Savior of the world.

Peter and Paul are remembered as great pillars of the Church, yet neither was perfect. Like us, they were sinners by nature. Peter denied his Lord three times, and Paul persecuted the Church of God. Yet both were brought to repentance and lived by faith in the forgiveness of sins won for them by Christ. Their lives testify not to their own greatness but to the greatness of God's mercy.

Both apostles boldly confessed that Jesus Christ alone is the Savior of sinners. They proclaimed the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles, calling all people to repentance and faith in Christ. Through their preaching, the Holy Spirit gathered many into the Church and strengthened believers in the true faith.

Peter and Paul also remained faithful to Christ to the very end. According to ancient Christian tradition, Peter was crucified upside down because he considered himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded in Rome for his confession of Christ.

The example of St. Peter and St. Paul reminds us that salvation is found in Christ alone. We, too, have been called by the Gospel to confess His holy name. May God grant us courage to be lights in a dark world, speaking of Jesus to our neighbors and inviting them to hear His saving Word. And may He keep us steadfast in the true faith until the end, that we may faithfully confess Christ, who loved us and gave His life for us.

We give thanks to God for the opportunity to teach His Word to those who attended Vacation Bible School. We are also grateful for everyone who assisted with teaching, music, crafts, snacks, games and decorations. Throughout the week, the children learned that Jesus came to save us from our sins and that He will return in glory on the Last Day. They also memorized passages of Holy Scripture and the theme hymn, "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying" (LSB 516). To God be all the glory.

Braelyn, Benjamin, and Isabella publicly confessed the faith and received the Lord’s Supper for the first time. We pray that they may remain steadfast in this faith until all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness.

Today we had Confirmation Questioning for Braelyn Johnston, Benjamin Kraemer, and Isabella Kraemer. This examination of our catechism students lets us know what they have learned about Scripture from Luther's Small Catechism.
