Testimony of Healing: Fear Dissolves During Adventure by Katie Penfield

“Everlasting arms of Love / Are beneath, around, above” is one of my favorite lines from a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 53, John R. MacDuff). I had an experience where I got a better understanding of this concept.

A group of friends and I decided to go tandem skydiving, with a professional jumping with each of us. I’d never done anything like this before and had initially not been interested, but I was inspired by my friends to try something new.

As we were driving out to the dropzone where we would get on the plane, I had an overwhelming fear and doubt and was starting to worry about all the “what-ifs” involved. Thankfully, we were all listening to the weekly Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly in the car, and this did calm me a bit. But once we arrived, the fear and nerves came back aggressively. However, I knew that I was capable of getting past my distress and could keep moving forward.

Once we had all suited up and were waiting for our tandem partners, I grew quiet and looked around at all of the God-given joy being expressed by the jumpers around me. When the tandem partners returned from their previous jump, we were immediately put onto our plane. Then I didn’t have much time to think or to question whether or not I would go through with this.

As the plane started to take off, I prayed, and this thought from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy came to me: “Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation” (p. 332). I knew I was being tenderly cared for by God—that I was God’s child and could never be in harm’s way. God was truly the one in control—not me, not my tandem partner, not the parachute. I thought about falling into the arms of divine Love. As I was considering these ideas, I felt completely at peace. The next thing I knew, we were at the open door of the plane and then falling into the sky.

For over a century, her own testimony has been part of the chapter titled “Fruitage” in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
