When work gets overwhelming, our first reaction is often to reach for more information.

A better plan. A clearer read on the situation. More control.

But Jesus' invitation to come rest in him isn't about staying in control; it's about joyfully submitting to his control.

And he calls himself gentle and lowly.

The rest Jesus offers doesn't start with knowing enough. It starts with knowing him.

A yoke was a piece of gear that joined two animals together so they could pull as one. When Jesus says "take 𝗺𝘆 yoke upon you," he is not describing a lighter schedule.

He is describing a different way of working: not alone, not under the full weight of expectations and outcomes and pressure, but alongside him. Because of him. Through him. It's 𝗵𝗶𝘀 yoke.

That means we can still be diligent, still work hard, still show up fully, and do it all without our peace being tied to whether we performed well enough today. All because Jesus is enough.

The work does not disappear. The one carrying it with us changes everything. If this week has already felt heavy, Matthew 11:29 is worth meditating on:

"𝘛𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘶𝘱𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘮𝘦, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘴."

Most of us know how to stop working. But that doesn't always mean we know how to rest.

Our schedules stay full. Our minds keep running. Even on our days off, we can find ourselves thinking about what still needs to get done.

But when God rested after creation, it wasn't because he was exhausted. He stopped to enjoy the goodness of what he had made.

Biblical rest invites us to do the same: to turn our attention away from everything we still need to accomplish and enjoy the goodness of God and what he has already done.

And the gospel gives us the greatest reason to rest. Through Jesus Christ, our standing before God doesn't depend on our productivity or performance, but on his finished work for us.

We can stop striving to prove ourselves because Christ has already accomplished what we never could.

The Hebrew word for "rest" in Genesis 2 literally means to cease or desist. But the verse right before it tells us what God actually did when he stopped: he looked at everything he had made and called it very good.

He didn't go blank. He reflected. He enjoyed.

That is the pattern biblical rest is built on, not emptiness, but attention turned toward God and what he has accomplished.

That's not often the default way we think of rest. We may stop working but then immediately fill the space with something else. Genesis 2 invites us toward something better: a rest that is grounded in what God has done, not in how efficiently we managed our time.

You will never accomplish enough to make yourself secure.

There will always be another task to finish, another goal to reach, another problem to solve, another opportunity to prove yourself.

That is why the hope of the gospel is not that we finally become good enough at our work.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻.

At Babel, God came down and restrained humanity’s attempt to make a name for itself. And ultimately, God came down to us in Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived the perfect life we have not lived. He accomplished the work we could never accomplish. And through faith in him, we receive his righteousness and a secure identity that our success could never provide.

We will still experience toil. We will still fail. Work will still be difficult.

But our hearts do not have to be ruled by any of it.

Our security is found in what Jesus has done, not in what we can do.

That’s the gospel at work.

Our work is one of the many places God has called us to glorify Him and love our neighbors. And as Christians, we don't enter our workplaces simply to earn a living, but as people who have been redeemed by Christ and called to serve Him in all that we do.

On Sunday, October 25, we're holding our very first 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 at Restoration Community Church!

As we conclude our sermon series, The Gospel at Work, we'll take time during our worship gathering to pray for those in our church family who have started a new job or stepped into a new role over the past year.

During this time, these individuals will commit to honoring God through their work, and our church family will commit to encouraging them with the gospel as they seek to serve Him faithfully. Together, we'll be reminded that our work doesn't earn us God's favor, but because of what Christ has done for us, even our ordinary work can be done for His glory.

There is nothing wrong with doing good work.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to provide well, accomplish something meaningful, or even be recognized for work done faithfully.

But our hearts have a way of taking good things and turning them into ultimate things.

That was the problem at Babel. God had already given the people an identity as his image bearers, but they chose to use their work to “make a name” for themselves.

And we can do the same.

Our careers, accomplishments, income, influence, even the success of our children can quietly become ways we try to prove that we matter.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗹 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

We do not have to use our work to create an identity for ourselves. In Christ, we have already been given one.

So the question is not simply, “Am I working hard?”

It is: “Whose name am I trying to make great?”

Genesis 1 and 2 tell us that work isn't a punishment, it's part of how God designed us to reflect him in the world. The mandate to fill, subdue, and have dominion over creation was given before sin entered the picture.

But Genesis 3 shows us what happened when that relationship broke. The toil, the ethical friction, the exhaustion, and the restless sense that we never quite did enough, none of that is what work was built to be. It's what sin introduced into work.

Most of us have spent so much time inside the broken version that it's hard to imagine the original. But Genesis gives us a vision of the good gift God designed our work to be, and what God is moving all of history toward restoring: a creation fully and freely filled by his image bearers, free from toil, free from corruption.

Christ is the beginning of that restoration.

Genesis 2:15 says God placed the man in the garden to work it and keep it. The work started exactly where he was placed.

Not somewhere more impressive, not somewhere he chose for himself. Right there. =

It's easy to live as if our jobs are just a means to something better, or to carry the anxiety that we might be in the wrong place.

But the passage suggests the calling to fill and steward creation is broad enough to include wherever God has currently put us.

Whatever your work looks like right now, you're not outside his ability to use it.

Your work may have your name on it, but ultimately, it belongs to God.

The skills you have, the opportunities in front of you, and whatever influence comes with them did not originate with you. They are gifts entrusted to you by the God who made you.

That means our work is more than a way to earn a paycheck, build a reputation, or prove ourselves.

It is stewardship.

The gospel frees us from needing our work to establish our worth, and it gives us a greater purpose for what we do: to faithfully use what God has given us for his glory and the good of others.

Whatever work is in front of you today, remember who you’re really working for.
