Sabbath School’s lesson:

• Importance of studying Bible prophecy: There is a growing interest in this topic and a need to understand potentially concerning subjects like the beasts and the mark of the beast in Revelation. The panel believes that understanding the principles of prophecy is crucial to discerning the truth from the “fanciful interpretations” often found in books on the subject.
• God desires to be understood: This includes understanding Bible prophecy. Such understanding requires more than superficial reading—it involves study, prayer, and asking God for help. He promises the Holy Spirit to guide believers into all truth. Learning directly from Jesus is encouraged rather than relying on flawed human interpretations.
• The entire Bible is essential to understanding prophecy: From Genesis to Revelation, each part plays a role. The Old Testament is not irrelevant—it provides the foundation and context for the New Testament, and Jesus is present in both. The Bible should be treated as a unified story, like a “jigsaw puzzle,” rather than a collection of disconnected sayings.
• Scripture interprets Scripture: Believers should go directly to the Bible to understand its meaning instead of relying solely on external authorities or personal interpretations. Comparing scripture with scripture (“line upon line, precept upon precept”) is the key method for accurate understanding.
• Bible prophecy often uses symbolic and figurative language: Interpretation principles are necessary to determine whether language is literal or symbolic. For example, William Miller’s principles suggest that if a word makes sense literally and does not violate the laws of nature, it should be taken literally; otherwise, it is figurative. Understanding symbols involves tracing the use of the word throughout the Bible and applying its explained meaning. Examples include mountains representing governments, beasts representing kingdoms, and waters representing people.
• The central focus of Bible prophecy is Jesus Christ and God’s plan of salvation: Even frightening images and prophecies ultimately point to Jesus. Studying prophecy should lead to a deeper understanding of Jesus, His work, and the path to salvation.
• Prophetic information in the Book of Daniel was sealed until “the time of the end,” which is now: The unsealing of this information—especially about the 2300 days and the heavenly sanctuary (Daniel 8:14)—provides crucial insights into Jesus’ ministry in heaven. Therefore, studying the book of Daniel is vital for understanding end-time prophecies.
• History and current events should be used to confirm, not interpret, Bible prophecy: Understanding the biblical meaning of symbols should come before looking for their fulfillment in historical events.
• Faith is the most important rule for understanding prophecy: This faith requires sacrifice and a willingness to prioritize God’s Word above worldly desires and opinions.
