Dellwood Cemetery

Dellwood Cemetery Dellwood Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1865 in Manchester, Vermont Mark Skinner of Chicago, and the Hon. Helmus M. Mr. Burton A. A.G. Clark, E.B.

In 1865 Dellwood Cemetery Association was incorporated, by Special Act of Legislature, and the land (some 13 acres) was conveyed to the association by the Hon. Wells of New York, former residents of Manchester Village. About Six Thousand Dollars were subscribed for the purpose of embellishing the grounds. Thomas, a rural architect of high reputation, was employed to plan and lay out the avenues, w

alks, and burial lots; which plan is being executed by Messrs. Burton and F.H. Orvis, the Committee of Superintendence, to the satisfaction of the Association. The avenues and walks have been graded, a substantial fence, a receiving vault, two beautiful lakes, and a large iron vase (presented by Judge Skinner) place in the center of one of the large circles, attract the attention of the visitor. Dellwood Cemetery, beautiful by nature and made attractive by art, it is hoped will continue to be cared for in all time to come.

Have you ever wondered how to clean family gravestones? Do they need to be reset? Here's a great opportunity to learn at an all day workshop being held at Dellwood Cemetery on July 18th from 9AM-3PM.

Participate in gravestone cleaning and learn the most common safe & effective repair techniques!

A discussion on historic preservation will begin the day with a short walk and talk tour, visually surveying some of the most historic gravestones and monuments in need of repair.

Safe & effective removal of biological activity w/ approved stone cleaners & graffiti removal & prevention. HANDS ON! Adopt a stone and perform the cleaning process yourself.

The most common repair techniques will be discussed and performed including resetting a badly leaning or sunken tablet stone and joining broken gravestone fragments using epoxy, clamps, and bracing techniques.

*If time allows* we will employ an overhead, lifting tripod and demonstrate how to rig and lift monuments safely.

*If time allows* we will review materials required and the process involved in replaced eroded or lost stone with the use of a stone infill material, including preparation, application and curing of mortars.

Tomorrow night, July 15th at 6PM is a go! The weather looks to be cooperating after the recent monsoons. However, as a result of all the rain, the grounds have been saturated and we have made accommodations for parking along Hildene Road next to the cemetery. People will be positioned to direct you.

To answer a few of the questions we have received:

It is not a ticketed event, everyone is welcome!

Each of the 9 characters will be +-7 to 10 minutes, so if you want to bring a chair, you can, but you will be walking from place to place in the cemetery (we can't bring them to you!).

We will have transportation available from / to your vehicles and as needed during the program. Dellwood covers 58 acres, and while we certainly won't be walking the whole property, it is spread out so wear comfortable shoes!

Looking forward to a wonderful evening, the Dorset Players have put a lot of work into their scripts, bringing back the stories of these residents (and an ancestor in one case!). Suzi Dorgeloh was instrumental in gathering everyone, fitting their costumes and arranging the rehearsal. Brian Keefe, our neighbor at Hildene helping with parking and lending us a volunteer and their tram for transportation... and I've borrowed a small fleet of golf carts to make up the difference! Our superintendent came home from his vacation to make sure the grounds were in tip-top shape for everyone.

Such great collaborative effort with community members and organizations to make this happen!

Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night!

MANCHESTER — The Dellwood Cemetery Association and the Manchester Historical Society, with the Dorset Players, will again present “Dellwood Comes Alive,” merging history with theater.
