"If we think our family relationships will make us happy, we are “spending our labor on what does not satisfy.” We’ve made our family into an idol. Now here’s the good news: God is a father to the fatherless. If you’re a spiritual orphan, if you don’t know what it is to have God as your spiritual Father, if you’re struggling to find a spiritual “center,” I want you to know that God offers to adopt spiritual orphans. He gave up his Son so that we could be, not slaves, not even employees, but sons and daughters. His sons and daughters. That comes through trust in Jesus Christ. There is no one better to teach us what being a family is all about."

"If our trust is in the Jesus who died on that cross without broken bones to keep the law that we fail to keep and to atone for the sin that we commit, we will not ultimately be broken. Our bones may be broken in this life; our confidence may be shattered, our body may be incinerated in the fires of martyrdom. But, as our friend Charles Spurgeon said, “we shall neither be halt nor maimed in the kingdom, but shall be presented after life’s trials are over without spot or wrinkle or any such thing.” We who deserve the hell of unfulfilled desires will exist with all desires fulfilled by the One who suffered hell for us."

"Jesus’ cry on the cross tells us that the Christian faith is not wish-casting. It deals with the cold, hard reality of a world that is shot through with gross and evil sin. And it provides the only actual remedy: the death of a man who was also God, and his resurrection to defeat death and sin and hell. When you pray like David, you may not see an immediate answer. Suffering is a part of a broken world. Anybody who tells you otherwise is lying to you. But Jesus Christ, through his suffering, has shown us how God’s purpose can be worked out in our suffering, to bring him glory and to make us more like Jesus. And God calls us to honest faith in him."

'The most important thing we must remember about the unseen world is something that Daniel couldn’t as fully appreciate. Our victory doesn’t ultimately depend on us. The battle has been won by the living Christ, who defeated death and Satan at the cross and in the resurrection. Knowing that, venture into this unseen world with confidence not in yourself but in the living God and the power of the Spirit through the work of the Son.
