The Roman word "pallium" refers to a person's cape or cloak, often used in relation to a soldier. When the person passed away, they were covered in the cloak. This led to the term "pall" which is a heavy, usually white, and sometimes ornate cloth that is draped over the casket. The terms "casket bearer" and "pall" were merged together to create the term "pallbearer" which refers to a person who carries the casket during a funeral service.

Sometimes veterans have no family or friends to memorialize them when they pass. When a veteran is unclaimed, we are honored to provide them with a funeral service with full military honors. Such was the case with Pvt. Robert Hysner in South Carolina recently. Dunbar Funeral Homes made arrangements for Hysner to receive the honor he earned for serving our country. Check out the story by Shelly Garzon with WLTX-TV.

Private First Class Robert Hysner died in December at 95. After his passing, the Sumter County Coroner's Office searched for living relatives but found none.
