Have you been watching and listening for God’s Spirit this week? It can be discouraging when you feel as though God is silent. Often, we watch, listen, and pray for a clear, unmistakable message from God. Yet more often, God speaks in a still, small voice.
You may remember the story of the prophet Elijah, whom God instructed to stand on the mountain because the Lord was about to pass by. Elijah witnessed a mighty wind so powerful that it shattered rocks and tore through the mountains. Surely the Lord was in such a display of power — yet the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, and after the earthquake, a fire. Again, it seemed certain that God must be in these dramatic events — but He was not in the earthquake or the fire. Finally, after all had become quiet, there came a gentle whisper, and the Lord spoke to Elijah.
Are you listening for the gentle whisper? Perhaps you dismiss that quiet prompting because it asks something that seems small or insignificant compared to the needs of the world. Yet remember the boy who offered two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus was able to multiply even that small offering. God can do the same with what we place in His hands.
As you learn to quiet yourself, listen for the still, small voice, and respond in faith, you will begin to recognize the Spirit more readily and grow in your ability to serve God each day.
