This Sunday, we're pleased to welcome Rev. Kevin James into the pulpit. Kevin and his wife, Brenda, joined the GBC family last year. Kevin pastored Salem Baptist Church in Sparta, VA for over 30 years before moving to Goochland with Brenda. He now serves as our GBC Outreach Coordinator and we are thankful to have him, and feel blessed to hear from him this Sunday. Join us at 9:30 am in the sanctuary or online at https://www.youtube.com/

Have you been watching and listening for God’s Spirit this week? It can be discouraging when you feel as though God is silent. Often, we watch, listen, and pray for a clear, unmistakable message from God. Yet more often, God speaks in a still, small voice.
You may remember the story of the prophet Elijah, whom God instructed to stand on the mountain because the Lord was about to pass by. Elijah witnessed a mighty wind so powerful that it shattered rocks and tore through the mountains. Surely the Lord was in such a display of power — yet the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, and after the earthquake, a fire. Again, it seemed certain that God must be in these dramatic events — but He was not in the earthquake or the fire. Finally, after all had become quiet, there came a gentle whisper, and the Lord spoke to Elijah.
Are you listening for the gentle whisper? Perhaps you dismiss that quiet prompting because it asks something that seems small or insignificant compared to the needs of the world. Yet remember the boy who offered two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus was able to multiply even that small offering. God can do the same with what we place in His hands.
As you learn to quiet yourself, listen for the still, small voice, and respond in faith, you will begin to recognize the Spirit more readily and grow in your ability to serve God each day.

“How can a good God allow _____?” is one of the most honest questions people ask today, as they ponder all the evil in this world. While the Bible doesn’t answer it directly, it does tell us how God feels about evil and God’s ultimate plans to deal with it. What’s more, scripture also describes how God may use us to help prepare the way for his kingdom on earth right now. Join us this Sunday at 9:30 am as we think about our role in God’s kingdom looking at Revelation 21.

This past Sunday Pastor Curt reminded us we are to trust God not play God. We are not asked to create God’s Kingdom on Earth, particularly not through weapons of this world. God is already at work all around us, and we are called to reveal and proclaim the divine kingdom that already exists and surrounds us. In the parable of the wheat and the weeds, the farmer allowed both the wheat and the weeds to mature before harvesting them and sorting them. The Greek word for “weeds” is Zizania, which is widely understood to refer specifically to bearded darnel, a ryegrass that closely resembles wheat in its early stages. The farm workers were not tasked with separating the easily confused plants. The final sorting of wheat and weeds belonged to the farmer alone. It is through God’s grace that we are allowed to grow and mature before we are judged. That grace is extended to those we perceive as our enemies as well.
In many of the Psalms, the psalmist unleashes before God all of his anger, often with calls for violent retribution against his enemies. The language is intense. In Psalm 109, the psalmist asks that the days of his enemy be few – that his children be fatherless, wandering and begging – his wife a widow- that no kindness be extended to him. The psalmist does not hold back or sanitize his requests – they freely flow from a place of deep hurt and anger. Yet, in the end, the psalmist always acknowledges God’s authority to take action, leaving his grievances poured out and trusting God’s discernment and judgement.
To experience the Kingdom of God around us—and to reveal it to others—we must let go of our grievances and turn them over to God. What do you need to pour out before God? What do you need to release to divine authority?

We're looking forward to celebrating all the women who serve as mothers and mother figures this Sunday. At GBC, we honor this day each year with the tradition of Parent-Child Dedication, as we recognize the special role parents and church family have together in the life of a child. We hope you will join us at 9:30 am.
