Peter's Church in the Great Valley has been a center of Episcopal worship since pre-Revolutionary times. Peter's celebrates the Eucharist three times each Sunday (twice a Sunday in the summer months), with services at 8, 9, and 11:15 am, in two distinctly beautiful settings - the historic Church, first built in 1744 and carefully maintained through the centuries, and the Bank Barn, a light-filled,

wood-beamed new construction with classrooms and meeting rooms in addition to its main worship space. Music holds an important place in St. Peter's Church's worship and community life. Five choirs - the Chamber Choir, Gallery Choir, Family Choir, Children's Choir, and Handbell Choir - fill its celebrations with prayerful song, and choral Evensong is held several times a year. Organ concerts and other musical events keep the Holy Hill ringing. For more information about music at St. Peter's, contact [email protected]. Exciting news about our friend Chris Exley! And we are deeply grateful to Canon Jane for all her assistance as we navigated the rector transition and call process.

"My Siblings in Christ,

The Rev. Canon Jane Gober has been with this diocese since 2019 and I have personally known her for many years. Her gifts for teaching and encouraging others to grow more deeply in the faith were among the primary reasons I invited her to join this diocese. Since she has been in charge of clergy transitions, she has shepherded 19 people through the ordination process - with 23 people currently in the process for ordination - and completed more than 20 full-time calls.

At the end of October, Jane will be moving to North Carolina to be closer to her family. We will deeply miss her presence and ministry among us, but also recognize that God calls us to care for those entrusted to us, and we rejoice that she will be able to be more present with her loved ones.

I am pleased to share that the Very Rev. Chris Exley, rector of All Hallows' in Wyncote and the Dean of the Montgomery Deanery, will begin serving as Canon for Transitions on October 11, allowing for some overlap with Jane.

Chris has a pastoral presence that is unrivaled. He has faithfully served All Hallows' for five years and previously served as Assistant Rector at St. Peter's in the Great Valley. His roots in this diocese run deep. As a child, he was baptized and worshiped at All Saints' in Norristown, spent 30 years at Church of the Epiphany in Royersford, and was sent to seminary by St. James' in Collegeville. Throughout his life, God has formed him through the people and congregations of this diocese, and I am grateful that he has answered this call to serve in this new capacity.

As Chris prepares for this transition, Canon James Stambaugh, Pam Prell and the diocesan staff will work closely with the people of All Hallows' to support the congregation and ensure a faithful and smooth transition.

Yesterday we bid a bittersweet farewell to our interim rector the Rev. Dr. Clarke French, who so strategically and compassionately guided St. Peter's through the transition period. September 13 marks the first Sunday of incoming rector John Kennedy.

Warm Clothing Drive

We are collecting items now through September for our fall warm clothing drive. Labeled bins are in the Historic Church, the Bank Barn, and the Parish House. Do your spring cleaning and end-of-season sale shopping with our Clothing Drive in mind. We will need anything clean and WARM for adults and kids. Our Outreach partners could use new or gently used and CLEAN socks, hats, scarves, gloves, sweatshirts or coats. Let's hope we don't have a winter like our last one, but there is a need every year.

Our drive has expanded to include items needed by male teens at The Church Farm School. They can use belts, shoes, sweat pants and brown or black blazers.

Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

While Independence Day rightly celebrates national freedom, the church also prays more broadly for the well-being and unity of all people within the nation. The Collect for the Nation, appointed in the Book of Common Prayer, reminds the faithful that liberty finds its truest expression in justice, mercy, and mutual care. It calls the church to intercede for those who govern and for citizens alike—that all may seek the common good under God’s providence.
