Pastor’s Perspective Question:
Alright, Pastor Max, we’ve got a rapid-fire round today, and this one is for the parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children out there!
Does it bother you when children are noisy in church? How do you feel about kids wanting to get a closer look at things in the sanctuary after the service, maybe coming up to see the altar or exploring their surroundings?
And while we’re at it… what would you want a parent to know if they’re worried their child is being “too distracting” during worship?
“No! Noisy children only suggest to me that a church is alive. In fact, I believe one of the signs of a church doing its job well is a church where the sounds, questions, wiggles, and interruptions of children aren’t stifled.
When a child is moving, exploring, asking questions, or even wandering around the sanctuary, they’re interacting with the environment around them. And what better place for them to learn how to belong than in a church?
So if your kiddo can’t sit still and what they need most is to wander the sanctuary, let them wander. And if they decide the best place to be is suddenly standing next to me during the sermon…well, apparently I have a new co-preacher. It’s okay. You don’t need to panic, apologize, or feel embarrassed.
And if you’re the parent wondering whether you’re being a distraction, I want you to hear this clearly: We want you here. You and your kid are not a distraction. You are a blessing.
Church should be a place where families don’t have to choose between being present and having a perfectly behaved child. We’re not here to make kids fit quietly into our worship. We’re here to make room for them in it & build the next generation of Jesus followers.
