When someone accepts Jesus into their lives, they experience a spiritual rebirth and are born again. At this moment, God’s Holy Spirit comes into their lives, lives within them, and changes them. With their new identity in who God is, they become a son or daughter of God and are now a citizen of a Heavenly Kingdom.

When this happens in our own lives, God has His way with us and we start to live into who we were created to be. We are choosing to move from darkness into light, from the old to the new, from our sin towards Jesus, from our will and our priorities to His will and His priorities. Everything we do we do in the name of the Lord as He aligns our life with His life. But did you know that this identity in Jesus influences not only us, but also our relationships? If we allow Him to, Jesus wants to influence our marriage, our family relationships, and our work relationships to reflect more of Him. When this happens not only do we find joy and peace but those around us find Him as well.

Popular culture can have a deep influence on all of us as we can easily find ourselves mirroring its trends, language, and values. Whether through media, fashion, or entertainment, we can adopt behaviors modeled by those in power, sometimes even using our own positions to exploit or diminish others. We see conflict avoidance modeled on television followed by criticism, gossip and slander as a way to retaliate and we learn to do likewise in our relationships. As culture encourages us to form exclusive tribes and demonize those who differ from us, we can feel justified in doing the same. Culture suggests that value is found in the accumulation of wealth, degrees, and possessions, causing us to relentlessly pursue these goals in a search for significance and value.

Unfortunately, this can also describe the lives of people who claim to follow Jesus. People who say they love Jesus while simultaneously engaging in hostile social media disputes or treating others with blatant disrespect. For some, the pursuit of the American dream leaves them too exhausted to be present for God or their families. For others it is putting politics ahead of their faith, easily passing judgment on others, or refusing to welcome anyone who is not like them. When this happens, it reveals a troubling reality: we can claim God as Savior but still live in a way where we are being more shaped by culture than by God and His Word. So as followers of Jesus, how can we follow after and imitate God and His ways as we live as light in a world that is filled with darkness?

People say clothes make the person but we all know that that is not true physically as much as it is true spiritually. We may wear an outfit that is pleasing to the eye and maybe even get us compliments, but those clothes can’t cover our anger, lust, envy, insecurity, pride, or greed. In fact, there are many people who spend lots of money on clothes to look good and beautiful on the outside, but those clothes don’t transform them or change their hearts, it just tries to cover whatever is happening internally. And followers of Jesus are not exempt from this. We all know people who claim to follow Christ; they wear the cross, have the tattoo with the Scriptures, and go to church, but yet their actions, words, attitudes, and how they treat others are far from God.

But the reality is that when we accept Jesus into our life and are born again, God actually gives us a new set of clothes to wear everyday - clothes that we must choose to put on that reflect who our Savior is and that our identity is now in Him - and not in anything else. When we choose to put on daily these new clothes that Christ gives to us, we end up living out and being the person we were created to be by God while here on Earth.

We all know the importance of doing what we can for good physical health - eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, exercising, and minimizing our stress levels, just to name a few. While prioritizing our physical body and well-being is important, the Apostle Paul reminds us that there is actually another body we must also care for that we are a part of - the body of Christ, His renewed community, also known as the church. As followers of Jesus and members of this spiritual family and body, we all have the responsibility to do what we can to contribute and make sure that the body remains vibrant and healthy. If each of us has an important role to play in the local body of Christ then we want to make sure that we ourselves are emotionally and spiritually healthy. Our individual emotional and spiritual health contributes to the health of the greater church body. When we do this hard work towards health, with God and each other, not only do we become healthy people, but the church now brings Jesus’ love, hope, restoration, and salvation to the world around them. Instead of causing more damage, confusion, and destruction that already exists in the culture, the church brings answers, repair, and healing.

It can be easy to say that we believe God loves us but then we encounter difficult situations or we engage in behaviors that are not good for us and suddenly we question: does God really love us? Maybe it is when you are going through a difficult time or when you were diagnosed with an illness. Maybe there seems to be no hope for your marriage or relationship or maybe you have been praying for a long time and your prayers have gone unanswered. Perhaps you have made a mistake or have sinned and think you need to fix yourself before coming to God. Even people who do not consider themselves to be followers of Jesus, question God’s love, goodness, and presence when they experience suffering or when they see suffering in the world. But if it is so common for us to experience moments in our lives that make us wonder if God truly loves us, then how can we hold onto and stand secure in God’s promises that He loves us and that by being reconciled to Him, we have direct access to Him? How can we boldly and confidently come before God as we embrace and live into the deep love He has for us?
