First Lutheran Church, Malden, MA

First Lutheran Church, Malden, MA Welcoming all in Christ's name. Sunday Worship 9:30am in person and online. We are a community of faith journeying together.

Come walk with us as we explore what God is up to in the world in in our lives. We are on the land of the Massa-adchu-es-et and Pawtucket people. Reconciling In Christ Affirmation of Welcome:

First Lutheran Church is called to the ministry of reconciliation. We embrace as a gift the diversity of our neighborhood and the world. We celebrate our human family’s diversity of sexual orientation, gende

r identity, race, ethnicity, age, faith history, economic status, marital status, physical and mental ability, and education. We affirm that all people are created in the image of God and as beloved children of God, all are worthy of God’s love and grace. We welcome the full inclusion of all people in the life and ministries of First Lutheran as we journey toward reconciliation through Christ. We specifically welcome people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and commit ourselves to the ongoing work of anti-racism. We recognize that there are differences among us, but believe that we can love alike even though we may not think alike. We proclaim this statement of welcome to all who have known the pain of exclusion or discrimination in the church and society. We invite all people to join us in our faith journey toward greater love, understanding, and mutual respect.

Rooted in God’s grace, Bishop Curry brings to his calling a spirit of hope, humility and bold faith. We pray for his ministry as he walks with this church into a new season.

A letter from the Massachusetts Council of Churches, signed by many faith leaders including our New England ELCA Bishop Nathan Pipho:

"And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” ~ Isaiah 56: 6-7

"Churches are, and have always been, places of prayer, solace, and safety since the time of Jesus Christ; this does not change with any new emperor, king, or president.

Churches are houses of prayer for all people, as the Prophet Isaiah proclaims. These houses of prayer for all people are, and must remain, places where all people can gather without fear, intimidation, or threat of violence. All who gather in houses of worship must be able to do so freely, based on our American values and the free exercise of religion.

We oppose the Trump administration’s policy change to allow Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CPB) to enter houses of worship, among other “sensitive spaces” like schools, hospitals, libraries, and domestic violence shelters, rescinding longstanding Department of Homeland and Security policy.

Churches are, by definition, sanctuaries.

We resist this policy change as Americans on the First Amendment principle of our right to gather freely and exercise our right to worship. We also resist this policy change as Christian leaders, claiming our baptismal covenant to resist evil. Finally, we invite all people of good will to resist this policy change as it sews chaos and uncertainty in the lives of many people as they simply desire to gather in prayer, free from intimidation and fear."

The holidays should be a holy time spent with family. But in America, hundreds will be spending the holiday behind bars — because they crossed the United States border seeking protection. You can bring joy and hope to those in immigration detention by writing holidays cards in English and Spanish. Write and decorate holiday cards with messages of hope with us on Sunday, December 1st after worship at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Woburn. All of God's beloved children deserve to be home for the holidays, but to those who cannot we send encouragement and love, with more action to come in the new year.
