President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863; but was unenforceable in Texas without military intervention until more than two years later. Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of the Emancipation Proclamation and freeing the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. It has been celebrated for over a century and was signed into a U.S. federal holiday in 2021 by President Joseph Biden. Long celebrated by Black communities nationwide as "Freedom Day," Juneteenth is widely regarded as the longest-running African American holiday. It is considered a second US Independence Day.

CW: Mass shooting, death of multiple LGBTQIA+ and Hispanic people.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the deadly mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. We remember this day as a massacre against the LGBTQIA community; but we must also recognize that the shooter (who we are not naming) chose to go on Latin night, thus making it also a massacre of Hispanic people. We hold these simultaneous sorrows in our hearts and we pray for an end to all kinds of hate.
