Lakeview United Church of Christ

Lakeview United Church of Christ We believe that God is still speaking. Lakeview UCC is Open and Affirming to all. Arthur Waidman. And here we are--but not quite! Under Rev. Rev. In 1978 Mr.

Lakeview United Church of Christ was founded as Faith Community UCC in 1964 under the leadership of Rev. It was a merger of two German Evangelical Churches, one in Fosters and the other at what was about to become the interchange of I-275 and Montgomery Road. A couple of years later Landen city developers urged the major cooperating denominations of the area to agree on which one would do a new ch

urch start as an ecumenical project, and that one could have the current site at no cost. Waidman's leadership the two former churches were sold, and the funds realized were used to build the "church house", now Hope Homes (a long-term housing agency for mentally handicapped elderly) located just south of the church campus. The "house" served as parsonage and church meeting place. Waidman left soon after to pursue another call, and a ministry was provided on a part-time basis by Rev. Donald Calvert and Rev.George Siddall. In 1976 our first church unit was built (now called Fellowship Hall). Student Norman Haag had assumed leadership a few years earlier. The Fellowship Chapel on Columbia Road north of King's Island had been included in the operation which was now functioning somewhat as a multi-point charge, called Columbia Road UCC. Haag moved from the area to complete his work at Bangor Seminary in New England. With student Georgann Hilbert, Rev. Dick Glatfelter began a part-time pastorate January 1, 1979. The two churches worked hard and discussed a wide range of goals, but it became clear that there were questions concerning how they would embrace the UCC, with its social action goals, ecumenical nature, and contemporary education emphasis. At a Council meeting in February of 1980, one of the Council members offered a proposal that they would disband and that here, in this place, the United Church of Christ could make a new beginning, a new mission church! It seemed pretty far out, but that's exactly what happened. Once Columbia Road UCC ceased to exist, a mission committee was appointed and Rev. Dave Schwab was called as the colonizing pastor. With God's help, this small church became Lakeview UCC. As the years went by, the congregation grew, founded a popular preschool, built a sanctuary, and added a Christian Education wing. Over the years, the membership has expanded and contracted, but Lakeview UCC continues to focus on discerning God's will, serving Christ, and following the Spirit to reach out to our community and live into God's Kingdom. We hope that you will come visit and worship with us.

Our 5th Sunday mission in the month of May is Sweet Cheeks!

CHANGING THE BOTTOM LINE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
Traditional government assistance programs like SNAP and WIC don’t cover the cost of diapers. Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank, which is now a program of St. Vincent de Paul – Cincinnati, has been providing diapers to local families in need since 2015.
In 2025, Sweet Cheeks had the following impact:
· 2,271,603 diapers distributed
· 3,786 children served per month
· 46 distribution partners in their network
· 800,783 diapers donated to SCDB

Lakeview UCC has been supporting Sweet Cheeks from the beginning with an annual diaper drive and collection. This year’s diaper drive and collection will be May 31st.
How can you help?
· Donate diapers of any size.
· Sizes 4, 5, and 6 as well as pull-ups are especially needed.
· Loose diapers are welcome, as long as they are in a zipped bag.
· Don’t want to buy diapers? Our collection that day will also support Sweet Cheeks!

Let’s join Sweet Cheeks in their mission: We believe every person deserves access to essential items like diapers and period products. When neighbors in need don't have access to these items, they miss out on school, work, and struggle to pay their bills.

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank, a program of St. Vincent de Paul - Cincinnati, partners with local nonprofits and healthcare providers to provide free diapers to families in need, while also raising awareness of the basic health need for diapers.

Strengthen the Church and United Church Homes are our Missions for the month of May.

This year’s theme for the Strengthen the Church (STC) Offering is “Sent Forth in Love.” As members we have a shared commitment to cooperatively build up the UCC. Conferences and the national setting equally share the gifts given by members and friends through their local congregations. The funds raised support leadership development, new churches, youth ministry, and innovation in existing congregations. We are working together to build the church to come, preserving our future. By your generosity to this offering, you build up the Body of Christ. As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults.

Our 2nd Mission is United Church Homes, UCH began its mission at a time of ethnic discrimination, poverty, and pandemic. Over the years, people and situations have changed, but the mission has remained the same: to provide quality and affordable housing and healthcare options for older adults. Today, United Church Homes is a leading provider of healthcare and senior living services with a mission to transform aging by building a culture of community, wholeness, and peace for those they serve. In Dayton, UCH is currently fundraising for construction of the Longfellow Commons Community, which will convert a historical school and the rest of a city block into a place for members of the LGBTQ community and allies to call home and a safe place for them to belong in the community of others. Brimming with amenities like a theater, bodega, lounge, speakeasy, inspiration studio and fitness room, the community won’t be shy about its abundance of life lived here.

Childhood Food Solutions is Lakeview’s mission for the
month for April. This small local program provides food for
hungry children in the Roll Hill neighborhood and sur-
rounding neighborhoods of Cincinnati on weekends, holidays
and summer breaks, when school nutrition programs are
typically not available.

Lakeview’s donations this month will help the program to
purchase, pack and deliver food boxes and sacks to needy families identified by school personnel. In our current political climate, with major cuts in safety-net programs, your financial assistance for this private sector program is needed more than ever.

During the school year children receive their sacks at school. During the summer, we work with neighborhood groups to get our sacks into the apartment buildings and homes.

The March mission is One Great Hour of Sharing, in which we join with Christians in seven other denominations to support relief services wherever and whenever disaster strikes in the U.S.A. and abroad, and also to provide long-term, sustainable development assistance, refugee resettlement, and social services. Tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes ravaged communities worldwide, leaving behind devastation and extreme stress. Drought, violence and COVID wreaked havoc in communities, often leaving people without food and resources for themselves and their family. The UCC responds to disasters such as these through our One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Programs and grants help communities launch long-term recovery fol-lowing such disasters.

A portion of our OGHS offering also goes to refugee relief and resettlement across the world. As an example of our gifts at work, several UCC churches are actively hosting or supporting refugee families, often in coordination with churches of other denominations. Countless other churches have collected supplies and funds toward this effort. Tool kits and online training sessions are available through the UCC for churches supporting refugee families, all because of offerings to One Great Hour of Sharing.

OGHS will continue to help other poor communities find and develop new sources of food and clean water, and improve health standards. Efforts to empower women and families to become more self-sufficient are also supported through this mission. See the United Church of Christ website (search One Great Hour of Sharing) for more information on this and other ways OGHS helps those in need, and for statistics on how efficiently collected money is used. Specifically, look at the FAQs under OGHS.
