During this past summer we spent a considerable amount of time trying to learn and internalize the attributes of God (attempting to get a better picture of what He's like and how He is different from us). For the next few months we're going to apply that series to God's promises. This will be sort-of-a "so what" derived from our "what's so." If God can be counted on to keep His word, what does that mean for how we experience this life we're living?

For the next few months we'll be discussing how we image-bearers-that-we-are, can have confidence unlike those outside of Christ, for God has made some promises to us, and God doesn't fail to live up to any of His promises. We'll start this series by discussing God's promise to love. When God makes a promise, you can count on it!

Join on Sunday mornings at 9:00 or 11:00. The nursery and Kingdom Kids (PreK - 4th grade) are available during both services. 5th and 6th grade, jr high and high school meet at the 9:00 service only.

To be holy is to be set apart, like those dishes you set apart for special occasions. To be sovereign is to have the right to rule, like the right reserved for the host of holiday celebrations.

Simple enough when applied to our day to day tasks, but how do we make sense of these attributes when they're not on display through man, but through the Creator of heaven and earth?

When God reveals His holiness to man, what is the purpose for such a grand revelation? When God exercises His sovereignty, what do we do with those nagging questions about evil and the will of man? What role, if any, do we play in all of this? According to the Scriptures far more than you may think.

Do you ever look around at the world and wonder: "Why, God, do you put up with any of us?" We are as-a-species selfish, devious, prone toward entitlement, judgmental, arrogant, envious, discontent, and we line up rationale to justify our moral failings while being quick loathe and ridicule those same failings in others. And it's not just those out-there who are like that. With even a moment of introspection we realize we still wrestle with self-serving, self-seeking, and self-congratulating attitudes. Why does God care about us? Why not just wipe us out?

There's something about being shown love, especially when we don't deserve it, that tends to break us. Why does God love us? Why care about people so undeserving of His affection? Because it's who He is. This week we turn our attention to two more divine attributes, our God: gracious and loving.

Have you ever heard of simulation theory, also known as the simulation hypothesis? It's the belief that we are in a simulation: a sort of Matrix: that while we think we are real, we are in fact just part of some elaborate sim. This view holds that some-program was composed and is being run by a super-intelligence. This theory has become very popular among atheists and agnostics as an alternative to assuming this world is just a ridiculously "lucky" cosmic accident… it all seems too perfect.

At first contact many Christians balk at this view. It's just another dodge of Theistic evidence right? (particularly the teleological arguments for God's existence). But step back for a moment, and don't be reactionary. Listen to what they are saying: This plane of existence is not "the most real thing". There is an underlying intelligence who composed this elaborate ruse for some "greater purpose." And "the perfection of this world's composition hints that there's more to this cosmos than what we see, hear, touch, and taste." I quite like when I hear non-believers boldly asserting that we must be in a simulation.

I like to remind them that what they're describing is what Christians have been saying all along. This world is not prime reality, but a sort of game or test, composed by a super-intelligence in prime reality… let us call Him God. And while the purpose of this simulation may be a mystery to them, it is known to us. We know The Programmer. We have heard His directives. And we have been provided a means of escaping the Matrix. Christianity is the ultimate red-pill.

This week we will further our understanding of the author of this program, by coming to understand God's transcendent nature, His presence, and His faithfulness.

If I want to be like God, the open line of connection and communication are integral. In what way does this communion and connection reflect God? Well He sees all, He knows all, He is near, He has plans for us and directives for our lives, and He is actively working to see those things accomplished. Isn't it great to serve a God who misses nothing, who is never in a condition where He fails to understand exactly what we're going through (better even than we do), and who is able to perfectly address whatever those situations are, beyond what we could even conceive?

Thus far in our series we've examined God being self-sufficient and self-existent (the only necessary being dependent on nothing and no one), we've looked at the eternal nature of God and seen how it informs our view of significant theological matters, we've seen that God is infinite (boundless perfection), and immutable (unchanging, forever the same). This week we will consider how God perceives and acts. Namely how what He knows, He perfectly applies, and then perfectly brings about His plans.This week we'll discuss God being all-knowing, all-wise, and all powerful.

Last week we discussed God being "self-existent" and "self-sufficient," both concepts which, if understood properly, boggle the mind of men. But this week we will expand on our understanding of God by trying to deal with matters that are coherent and somewhat-comprehensible, and yet we are locked into a condition of existence that makes these matters hard for our minds to wrap around. We live in a world of time, and sequence, limitations, and change, but our God is eternal, infinite, and unchanging. If you can grasp the theological truths we're discussing this week, I believe that-understanding will lay to rest some of the most profound theological debates we tend to have inside and outside of the church. Join us as we reach out to touch God the eternal, infinite and immutable.

Humans are a tangle of features, many of which are in conflict. But God is not an entity with contentious features. The attributes (the things which are true of His nature) do not define Him, rather He defines them. In 1 John 4:8 & 16 John says "God is Love," not God chooses to love, not God has love… God IS love (that is to say love finds its source and definition in God, it's not something He has so much as something He is!).

In the same way the scriptures tell us God is light (1 John 1:5), God is spirit (John 4:24), God is a consuming fire (Deut 4:24, Heb 12:29), God is faithful (1 Cor 1:9, 10:13, 1 Thes 5:24), God is true (Rom 3:4, John 7:28), God is Holy Isa 6:3, Rev 4:8). God does not "have" attributes. The attribute is of Him and flows from Him. Attributes are not at war within Him as they are in us, rather He is unified, consistent, and self-same. All characteristics that are true of God are in such harmony that they do not cause tension as they do in us.

As we begin discussing the attributes of God, we must remember we're not talking about traits that make God who He is, but rather God defines and embodies the traits. If that seems foreign to you and I… it is. We are creatures characterized by our attributes, God is creator (the source of all good attributes), unified and whole in a way that we have a difficult time even understanding.

Can you imagine the peace and tranquility that God must have without such internal tension? The consistency and dependability? This week we begin examining God's attributes, and we must remember they are not features of God, not traits He has, but what He is. God has perfect unity in His trinity, harmonious and self-same in a way that the human mind might touch, but has difficulty in grasping.

How can we untangle the truth about God? How could we know who God really is and what God is really like? Well, it turns out that this is one of the primary goals of human beings. Jesus, in the midst of praying out loud in front of his disciples said it this way: John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Knowing God is the project of a lifetime, but this summer we're going to devote time specifically to the revealed attributes of God. Character and qualities that God made evident to us about Himself. Join us this summer as we let the revealed word of God inform our views and our knowledge of the Holy.

When we gather with other believers, we're joining with eternal companions, and I believe this is registered in our souls. There's a sort of rightness to it. Perhaps to put it in the vernacular of last week's message, it's like coming home. There's a sense of belonging that goes deeper than a familiarity with the people present, it's more like a deep sense of eternal family. These are people whom I will never ever lose.

Now I suppose you could say something similar about any gathering right? If you go to a concert, the crowd has all assembled for the same reason, and yet there's something peculiar about the nature of our gatherings. We've come to worship God, to be encouraged and challenged, to learn and grow, to share life with its joys and sorrows with these eternal companions… we're not just fans-of-a-band or enthusiasts-for-a-game; we're citizens of the Kingdom of the Living God.

Thus far in our series on life to the fullest, we've discussed being "Full of New Life," being "Full of Joy," "Full of Forgiveness," Full-of-Fellowship in Solitude," and being "Full-of-Fellowship in the Home." This week we will discuss being "Full of Fellowship in the Church." What is it that makes this crowd, like no other crowd… how is it that this gathering should feel like "my people?"
