Tonight we talked about prayer and how it balances our life. Relationships are nothing without communicating with each other, and prayer is how we communicate with Christ. The Lord's Prayer is a simple and to the point outline of how to pray; but it's not the only prayer we should pray. There is no right or wrong way to start or finish a prayer. Prayer is simply communicating with God. Prayer is a daily need for a believer and the more we pray the stronger our relationship will be.

We made some prayer journals to help us with our prayer life!

Tonight we discussed the difference between Justification and Sanctification

Justification is free.
Sanctification is costly.

Justification is instant.
Sanctification is lifelong practice.

Justification is not of works.
Sanctification produces works.

Justification focuses on the cross that Jesus took up once and for all.
Sanctification focuses on the cross I am to take up daily.

Justification is finished at the moment of faith.
Sanctification is not finished until I go to heaven to be with the Lord.

Sin: Something you do that doesn't please God. We know sin is sin because of what is written in the Bible. Our consequence for sin is separation from God.

Genesis 3
Adam and Eve's sin nature is passed down to us; but Jesus changes our hearts. He literally changes us from the inside out.

Romans 3:23
We are not just missing the mark, we can't even make it to the target. We are all falling short of the glory of God. The more we listen to the Bible, the better prepared we will be to say no to sin. The more we rely on our good and powerful God for help, the stronger we will be to resist temptation.

A few more questions for tonight's lesson

Q: How do we know Jesus really lived?

A: Many people wrote about Him as a real living person. Even people who didn't like or follow Him.

Acts 26:26

Q: What did Jesus claim about Himself?

A: He made some pretty bold and specific statements about Himself. Bread of life, light of the world, etc.... He claimed He had the same authority as God. Either He was who He said He was, or He was a liar and we KNOW He couldn't lie.

Q: Could the resurrection be made up?

A: Many people witnessed Jesus' crucifixion and saw Him after the resurrection and gave eyewitness accounts. Some people said the disciples made up the story of the resurrection. They had no reason to make it up. Many disciples were killed for believing in Jesus and His resurrection. Why would they go through persecution if it didn't really happen? 1 Corinthians 15:6

We pondered on a few questions tonight.

Q: Did everything have a beginning?

A: Yes! Well everything except God. We used dominos to help us understand that there has to be a "starter" or creator. For the last one to fall, someone had to be in charge for starting the first one. Our universe is the same. It didn't randomly begin. We know God started it all! Everything has a beginning except for God.

Q: Does the universe look designed?

A: Yes! It has an order to it. God has a perfect design for our universe so that everything works perfectly together. Genesis 1, Psalm 19:1

Q: If God exists why is there evil?

A: Sin. God gives us a choice. He created everything but gives us a choice whether we follow him. For love to be real, it has to be a choice. Evil is what happens when good is missing and God is good. What some intend for evil, God can use for good! Genesis 50:20

We made bracelets to help us remember that God is infinite and He is in control!

Tonight we started a new series about the doctrine of the Bible. We are going to dig in and really learn WHY we believe all that we believe about Christ and the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

We are starting an Easter series where we dive into the stories leading up to the crucifixion.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

Mark 11:12-19

The temple was losing its reverence because people were using it to sell and buy things. They also were cheating people and being dishonest. Jesus is upset about this because they are turning the house of prayer into a den of robbers. Jesus was rightly angered. The condition of the temple was a vivid indication of the spiritual condition of the nation.

Jesus cleansed the temple because they were not worshiping God. If we are saved, the temple is our hearts because Jesus lives inside us. Jesus cleanses our hearts when he saves us from our sins.

We created a heart identifying the sins we struggle with. Then talked about how Jesus' blood washes over us and cleanse our hearts.

We studied the last I Am statement tonight!

Jesus said "I Am the True Vine"

John 15:1-11
"I Am the true vine and my Father is the vine dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, He takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit."

Gardners (vine dressers) know where and when to cut away the dead stuff to allow their plants to grow. God does the same with us. He cuts away the dead stuff (our sins) to help us grow in Him. God is always working in us so that we may bear the fruits of the spirit. Sometimes God pruning us can be painful. In these hard times, we learn the most valuable lessons. We are called to ABIDE in Him. The word abide is written 10 times in these verses. If we are abiding in Him, we will have joy!

We enjoyed eating some "vines" to help us remember that Jesus is THE VINE that we should abide in and be connected to!
