Jesus at the Last Supper, gathered his friends around table, and taking the chalice filled with wine, he gave it to them and said, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.”
In the absence of the Eucharist, the Church is impoverished. Places in Central and South America simply have no priests. Mass is celebrated only once or twice a year in a local capilla. And without a validly ordained Bishop or Priest, there can be no Eucharist. In Protestant Churches, the Eucharist, is often called the Lord’s Supper, if they choose to observe it, is only sign and symbol. It is a serious duty for every Catholic to pray for increased vocations to the priesthood. And to seek them out.
Some of us here, or someone in our families, may have already heard the gentle voice of Jesus calling us to a life of service in the Catholic Church. An unanswered call never goes away. The only way to test the truth of the call, is to take a risk and answer it. That is what we mean by discernment.
Today on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord, we remember and celebrate that the Eucharist is the source and the summit of all the sacraments. Jesus is the Chief Priest and Mediator of the New Covenant. For we have been purchased, not with the blood of oxen or goats, but by the precious blood of the Son of God.
