Planted in early spring in the cold, dark earth, through terrible dry spells of drought and torrential rains and floods, Mrs. Leslie’s wildflowers by our porch have finally bloomed and blossomed into God’s own beauty. And only God can bring beauty from any situation. Today at our church I will be bringing a message from Psalm 13, a message on the God who goes with us through our grief.
Grief is that deep, painful feeling in our hearts of great sorrow at great loss. Every person experiences grief at some time. It may be the grief at the loss of a loved one. But it can also be grief in the midst of other losses, our health, our relationships, our hopes, our dreams. Grief can come suddenly at a time of tragedy, or it can build painfully slowly as we see a loved one slipping away. Everyone grieves differently, but one thing is for sure. Grief hurts, deeply. Left to itself, grief can even drive us to despair.
But that’s where God comes in. Because God is greater than our grief. God Himself promises to walk with us through every valley of sorrow, through times when our soul is as dry as powder. Through times when the rain just keeps pouring and it seems the sun will never shine again. Even in those times, God is moving. He is with us. He is Emmanuel.
The same God who oversaw the planting, the drought, the flooding of these seeds - then grew them into beautiful flowers - He can also bring beauty from the painful seeds of grief. Psalm 13 is six short verses - let the Lord speak to you in your grief today. He is with you, and in Christ Jesus you can and will bloom and blossom and sing His praises again. Because while our time is so very short - eternity with God is FOREVER! So bring your grief to God and worship Him today.
Psalm 13
How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
4 Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
5 But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
6 I will sing unto the Lord, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
