Farragut Museum Exhibit Highlights Area Church History, Cumberland Presbyterian Heritage

The Farragut Museum in Farragut, Tennessee, has opened a new temporary exhibit highlighting the history and community impact of local congregations, including several Cumberland Presbyterian churches in the Presbytery of East Tennessee.

“Cornerstones of Community: Churches of Farragut” opened May 7, 2026, and will remain on display through September 8, 2026, at the museum inside Farragut Town Hall. Admission is free.

The exhibit features artifacts and historical materials from churches throughout Farragut, including the original pulpit used from 1887 to 1964 at Virtue Cumberland Presbyterian Church and bulletins and photographs from Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1860.

Kristi Vining, historic resources coordinator for the Town of Farragut, said the exhibit was designed to tell the story of how local churches helped shape the community.

“Churches play a vital role in any community, and we wanted to focus on Farragut’s churches, how they were established, and how they made an impact in our Town,” Vining said.

According to the museum, approximately 20 churches are located within Farragut’s town limits, representing a broad range of Christian traditions and histories.

The Farragut Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The museum also houses exhibits related to East Tennessee history, the former village of Concord, and Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, the Civil War naval officer for whom the town is named. Guided tours are available, and the facility is handicapped accessible.

The Baptism of Christ is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. Painted in egg tempera on two panels of poplar wood, the dating is around 1450. It is held by the National Gallery, London.

The composition is centred on the figure of Christ being baptized in the River Jordan by the figure of John the Baptist on the right. Behind John, a man in white briefs, his feet already in the water, is struggling to get out of his undershirt. Above Christ is a dove, representing the Holy Spirit, with the shape of its wings resembling the clouds in the sky. The original triptych frame may have included a roundel above showing God the Father, which with Christ and the dove representing the Holy Spirit would complete the Holy Trinity. To John's right, separated from Jesus by the tree's trunk, are three angels.
