The number one thing we are called to do is to be like Jesus, but what does living like Jesus look like? Are we missing the mark when it comes to where we place our security? It is easy to get wrapped up in wanting more, more things, more material comfort, and more financial stability. We seem to be preoccupied with being secure in things on earth as opposed to being secure in God.
God is not against material things, but He is against material things having us. Jesus did not focus on these things when He lived on earth. He had no place (personal house) to lay his head. Jesus lived a life that was all about love and self-denial. He washed the feet of His disciples, served a last meal, and allowed a kiss from His betrayer. He laid down all His rights as King and did not take any offense in being humiliated, beaten, spat upon, and nailed to a cross. Jesus even descended into hades and gave us victory over our enemies.
We are called to live in this victory. If chasing and being preoccupied with things was not His primary goal, why should it be ours or why should it be a goal at all? Paul said we should be content in every situation; wherever you are and in all you do. Jesus and His followers lived this heavenly principle for us. Let us do the same so the world can have a Godly example to follow.
We are not called to live with a poverty mentality, but we need to ask the Lord to give us His heart and mind to serve others instead of only serving ourselves. God has called us to be good stewards of the resources He has given to us. The truth is that God’s arms are open daily. He is waiting for us to give Him our hearts and desires completely so that we can represent the real Jesus that walked this world and changed not only His generation but future generations as well. We can change this whole world if we believe and have faith, and quit playing with the world and the things which the enemy has made us numb to. There is so much more He wants to show you!
