Can two things that seem contradictory both be true?

Pastor Mitch Taylor has been comparing two biblical ways of talking about creation: God bringing order from chaos, and God creating everything from nothing.

His answer?

Sometimes faith leaves us with mystery.

A voice from the congregation calls it "a divine mystery," and Mitch picks up the thought before moving into another difficult biblical image: blood.

Passover.
Temple sacrifice.
Blood on the doorway.
The blood of Christ.

These aren't neat or sanitized images.

Mitch doesn't pretend they are.

Instead, this part of "The Congregational Uniform" asks us to sit for a moment with the strangeness of biblical language — and with the possibility that faith doesn't always reduce mystery to an easy answer.

This week we begin with gratitude for someone whose living situation has become more settled. A new roommate has been found, life is beginning to feel better, and we give thanks for that encouraging step forward.

We continue to pray for someone who recently needed emergency care for a heart concern. We are grateful that previous treatment is still working well, and we pray for continued strength and peace.

We are holding close an expectant mother who has been very ill and unable to keep food or fluids down. May she and her baby receive the care, nourishment, rest, and relief they need.

We pray for someone facing several health concerns at once and preparing for another medical procedure. May fear be quieted, answers become clear, and compassionate care surround her.

We also pray for someone living with ongoing pain while doctors search for answers. May healing come, and may there be patience and hope through the uncertainty.

We give thanks for a college student coming home for a little time to rest and reset. We pray for safe travel for students going back and forth between home and school, and for the comfort of familiar faces when they need it.

We lift up those searching for work, asking that the right opportunities open and that encouragement remain strong during the waiting.

We continue to pray for someone facing new developments in a cancer journey. May there be strength, healing, wise treatment, and loving support.

And we hold close someone preparing for a medical procedure, asking for calm, good care, and a smooth recovery.

Spiritual strength usually isn't built in one dramatic moment.

Paul writes in Romans 13:

"Let us throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light."

But what does putting on that armor actually look like?

Pastor Mitch Taylor compares it to baby-proofing or dog-proofing a house. Protection comes from lots of little things working together.

The same can be true of faith.

Reading Scripture.
Prayer.
Mission.
Sharing our faith.
Drawing closer to God over time.

A full suit of spiritual armor isn't one action. It's built piece by piece through the practices and relationships that shape a life of faith.

How can blood wash anything?

Pastor Mitch Taylor asks the question plainly:

"There's no hygienic nature to blood whatsoever."

And yet blood becomes one of the Bible's recurring images of protection, sacrifice and cleansing.

There is the blood over the doorway at Passover.

There is the Christian language of being washed in the blood of Christ.

And in this sermon, Mitch connects those images with Paul's invitation in Romans:

"Let us throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light."

Faith sometimes uses images that don't become less strange simply because we've heard them many times.

Sometimes it's worth stopping and asking what they are actually trying to tell us.

Did the Egyptians have to "lamb-proof" the house?

It's an unexpected question — but Pastor Mitch Taylor uses it to connect two very different biblical images.

In Exodus, the Israelites keep a lamb before Passover and place its blood over their doorways as a sign of protection.

Mitch describes it almost like putting armor on the house.

Then he jumps to Paul's words in Romans 13:

"Put on the armor of light."

From Passover to Paul's spiritual armor, the images are different — but both ask what it means to live under God's protection and prepare ourselves faithfully.

Sometimes a memorable biblical connection begins with a wonderfully odd question.

Who helps determine what feels "normal" to you?

Pastor Mitch Taylor remembers leading Bible studies at the Kenosha County Jail while he was in seminary.

When he mentioned that he had never tried ma*****na, one man was genuinely surprised. He couldn't remember knowing anyone who hadn't.

Mitch's point goes well beyond ma*****na.

The people around us help shape what feels ordinary, acceptable and possible. Their influence becomes part of the way we see the world — often without us noticing it.

And he argues that faith works in much the same way.

Christian community isn't simply about being in the same room on Sunday. Being around people who are seeking the same thing can strengthen, challenge and shape us.

This week we are holding close someone grieving the death of a parent while being unable to return home to be with family. We pray for comfort across the distance, and for loving support in a painful time.

We pray for communities devastated by recent mudslides and for all who are grieving lives lost. May those affected find safety, shelter, practical help, and strength for the long work of recovery.

We lift up all caregivers. May they have patience, wisdom, rest when they can find it, and people who remember to care for them too.

We continue to pray for someone healing after major heart surgery, asking for renewed strength and steady progress day by day.

We give thanks for people who have helped make a church responsibility change hands smoothly. Quiet acts of service and cooperation are a real gift to our Heritage community.

We are grateful that someone who had been missing was found safely, and we hold close the loved ones who lived through the fear and uncertainty of that search.

We pray for people who have lost homes or are struggling to meet basic needs. May food, clothing, shelter, and compassionate help reach them quickly.

And as a new school year begins, we pray for students starting new adventures, especially those missing home, as well as teachers, administrators, and support staff. May classrooms and campuses be places of welcome, growth, kindness, and belonging.

Key Ideas: What holds a congregation together and gives it spiritual strength? Psalm 119 points us toward God’s ways, Romans calls us to put love into action, and Jesus reminds us of the power of gathering in His name: “Where two or three are gathered.” Come reflect on the shared practices, relationships, and faith that shape us as a community of Christ.

Can changing your mind really change your life? Most of us want growth. Change is harder.

Our thoughts don't exist in a vacuum. Habits, emotional attachments, lived experiences, identity, old wounds and familiar patterns all shape the way we understand ourselves and the world around us.

In "Change Your Life, Change Your Mind," Pastor Synthia Taylor looks closely at Paul's invitation in Romans 12: "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

But what does that actually mean?

This sermon moves beyond simply "thinking positive." Pastor Synthia explores why changing established patterns can be so difficult, what transformation and renewal meant in Paul's original language, what may be living "rent-free" in our minds, and why genuine change may begin when we stop resisting a new perspective.

A caterpillar doesn't think harder until it becomes a butterfly.
Transformation goes deeper.
And renewal isn't simply becoming a more positive version of the person we already are.
It's learning to see differently.
