Not all immoral laws and public policies are necessarily equally. The Church can tolerate laws that allow--and maybe even encourage--sinful behavior. What can't be tolerated are laws and policies that undermine the rule of law and the citizenry's trust in the government.

The Orthodox Church challenges us to shift our understanding of failure (sin) from a legal model to a medical one. Holy Tradition diagnoses sin as a profound internal disorder or spiritual sickness, rather than simple rule-breaking. The Orthodox Church is seen as a "spiritual hospital" designed for therapeutic restoration, where Christ is the Chief Physician. Healing requires synergy—divine grace combined with the patient's intentional effort and "remedial self-mastery". Sacraments, like Penance and Unction, deliver this grace, aiming for the restoration of the whole person.
