Prelude

Welcome & Announcements

This is the day the Lord has made!
We will rejoice and be glad in it!

Introit

Prayer of Invocation

Holy God, we do not understand the mystery of the Trinity, yet we can see the way you work in the world through creation, the love of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Help us build our trust in what we cannot see or understand, and stand firm on the covenant you have made with humankind and with each of us in our baptism. Give us courage to be your disciples in this time and place. Amen.

*Hymn #14 For the Beauty of the Earth

Responsive Call to Worship Psalm 8

L: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

P: You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

L: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?

P: Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the sea.

L: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

ALL: Let us worship God!

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession
We grapple with your mystery, Triune God, and we do not understand the extent of your love and care for us. Forgive us when we are afraid because we feel that we are in this life all by ourselves. Remind us when we are frightened and insecure that the Three in One are with us in all your creations, in our baptism, and in our community. Comfort and empower us, as we gather in your Spirit, to go out into the world in your service…….(silent prayer) Amen.

Sermon Inquiring Minds Want to Know

*Affirmation of Faith
In life and in death, we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.
The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls all people to all ministries of the church.

*Gloria #582 Glory to God Whose Goodness…
Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me;
And to his son, whose grace has pardoned me;
And to the Spirit, whose love has set me free!
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, Amen.

Introit

Holy God, you sent your son to be the light of the world, so that all may know the brightness of your love. By the power of your Spirit, shine upon us this day. *Hymn #611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Responsive Call to Worship Psalm 104: 24-34

L: O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

P: Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

L: There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it. These all look to you to give them their food in due season;

P: when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

L: When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground.

P: May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

L: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

P: May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.

ALL: Let us worship God!

We believe that creation is inextricably linked.
We belong to one another in an undeniable way.
We are bone of bone and flesh of flesh, life breathed into dust.
We believe that God invites us to live into that truth-
to love without abandon,
to see the good in one another,
to trust that all belong to God.
We know that this life of connection is easier said than done,
which is why we gather in this space, week after week,
generation after generation, to be reminded:
We see God in each other.
This we believe. Amen.

Introit

Prayer of Invocation

Everlasting God, in whom we move and live and have our being: You have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness keep us from doing it; that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

*Hymn #12 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Responsive Call to Worship Psalm 66: 8-20

L: Bless our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept us among the living, and has not let our feet slip.

P: For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid burdens on our backs; you let people ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a spacious place.

L: I will come into your house with burnt offerings; I will pay you my vows, those that my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.

P: I will offer to you burnt offerings of fatlings, with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams; I will make an offering of bulls and goats.

L: Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for me.

P: I cried aloud to him, and he was extolled with my tongue.

L: If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has given heed to the words of my prayer.

P: Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

L: Let us worship God!

Call to Confession

Unison Prayer of Confession
Lord, there are times when we feel you have abandoned us. Perhaps that has to do with our expectation of a god who is too small or distracted to listen to our cries for help. Perhaps we don’t expect you to hear our prayers, to make your presence known to us, or to encourage us to seek the truth and do the right thing. Forgive us. Jesus promised to send us a companion, the Advocate, for our journey. He promised not to leave us orphaned. Help us imagine the triune God walking with us as we seek to keep your commandments and to love one another as you have loved us. ………(silent prayer) Amen.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Lord, we gather today to offer you praise and glory. May our
worship be pleasing to you. We ask that you shine your face upon us this morning that we might see your face in one another and hear your voice in the words that are spoken and the songs that are sung. Through your grace, make us living stones and build us into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood. Once we were not a people, but now we are your people; once we had not received mercy, but now we have. Give us the voices, O Holy God, to proclaim your mighty acts to all the world. Amen.

L: In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me.

P: Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me.

L: You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake lead me and guide me, take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge.

P: Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

L: My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.

P: Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.

L: Let us worship God!

Call to Confession

Forgiving and loving God, we are like newborns who hunger for your pure, spiritual milk. We seek to become your royal priesthood, a holy nation, and your people. We know that your
goodness is made present and real in Christ. We understand that an identity built on a solid foundation with Christ as the cornerstone can withstand present troubles. Yet so often we
shrivel up at the first sign of turmoil; we stumble and fall because we disobey your word. Forgive us. Nurture us warmly in the faith and help us to grow into a Christian life that rests on the cornerstone of Jesus Christ, who is our rock and our redeemer........(silent prayer) Amen.

And to the Spirit, whose love has set me free!
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, Amen.
World without end, without end amen.
World without end, without end amen.
World without end, without end amen.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, Amen.
