Located in Madison, Wisconsin, Holy Cross Lutheran Church and School work to educate our families and care for each other’s needs.

Holy Cross Lutheran School provides high-quality, Christian education to children from age 3 through eighth grade. Worship services are held on Sundays at 8:30am and 10:30 am, and on Mondays at 6:30 pm. During the summer, worship services are held on Sundays at 9:00 am and on Mondays at 6:30 pm. ghth grade, so that they may be equipped for a lifetime of service to their Savior, their families, their churches, and their communities. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that also includes many extracurricular opportunities, including choir, band, strings and a strong athletic program. Our student-teacher ration is approximately 15:1 and our students consistently achieve national test scores well above average. Non-member tuition is competitive with any Madison area private school. Tuition for families of other Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and Evangelical Lutheran Synod congregations is set at the same significantly reduced rate as that for members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Our students will:

* Believe in Jesus as their Savior from sin, death, and the devil through the work of the Holy Spirit in the Word of God
* Strive to live lives that glorify our Savior in thoughts, words, and actions through daily study of God’s Word
* Spread the Gospel message of salvation through Jesus to others
* Read fluently and comprehend content material and high-quality literature
* Research, plan, and produce written work of high quality
* Understand English grammar
* Prepare to succeed in high school mathematics
* Become proficient in the use of technology
* Develop a core knowledge in science, history, and geography
* Learn to understand and speak a foreign language
* Pursue and develop their interests in music, art, and athletics

Holy Cross Family Night at Warm Belly Farm!

The Holy Cross PTO and Holy Cross Lutheran Church Youth Group are excited to invite our Holy Cross families to a fun fall evening at Warm Belly Farm!

Friday, October 9
4:00–8:00 PM
Warm Belly Farm – Cottage Grove

Come enjoy:

🚜 Tractor rides
🍎 Apple launcher
🍬 Candy cannon
🎶 Live music and line dancing
🍂 Jumping pad, yard games and more!

This year, instead of our traditional potluck, each attendee will receive a voucher for their choice of a pulled pork sandwich or hot dog, plus a bag of chips. Dessert will also be provided in our VIP tent. Additional food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the farm.

Our staff is at the heart of everything that makes Holy Cross special! 💚

Meet Chef Erin Morgan, Food Program Director, and Carly Westphal, Assistant Food Program Director.

Chef Morgan joined Holy Cross in 2015, helping set up the commercial kitchen when Holy Cross opened our new school and early learning center, Kids Crossing. She started serving students in January 2016, after Christmas break. Ms. Westphal started at Kids Crossing as a teacher's aide in 2017, helping in all the classrooms as needed; and then started working in the kitchen.

Besides their invaluable cooking skills, both of these dedicated kitchen ladies play important roles with our Before- and After-School Programs and continue to help at Kids Crossing. They love the interactions they have with all the kiddos every day and say the Holy Cross environment feels like a family.

In their spare time, Chef Morgan enjoys naps 😴 - but she also loves hiking, kayaking and spending time with her children. Ms. Westphal loves a good thrift shop, jigsaw puzzles 🧩 and spending time with friends and family.

Chef Morgan looks forward to watching the students grow in their love and understanding of Jesus ✝, and loves seeing the admirable character and accomplishments of each 8th grade class. Ms. Westphal? She looks forward to Chef Morgan's cooking! 🤣 Now that's an awesome team! ❤

Many of you will recognize Pastor George Orvick, who shepherded Holy Cross Church from 1954-1986. One of his God-given gifts was his beautiful voice. Can you still hear him singing the Bugenhagen liturgy in your memory? Or how about "The Lord's Prayer"? 🎶

We're so pleased to share a recording of Pastor Orvick singing "The Lord's Prayer" in 1986 at the wedding of current pastor Mark Bartels and his wife, Sherri. Little did they know then that Pastor Bartels would also become a shepherd to Holy Cross Church in 1992 and continue in that role today. ✝

We hope you will join us for our 100th anniversary service on Sunday, September 27, at 10 am. And we hope you enjoy this precious memory. ❤️

Meet Nedra Griffin, Music Director at Holy Cross School.

Mrs. Griffin joined Holy Cross in 2015 as the Handbell Director and became the Music Director in 2022. She teaches music class to grades K-4, directs the 5-8th grade Fine Arts Fair choir as well as the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade handbell choirs. 🎶

She and her husband have 5 children, all of whom graduated from Holy Cross. In her spare time, Mrs. Griffin loves spending time with her family, gardening, antique/thrift shopping, and watching NFL and college basketball games. 🏈🏀

Did you know? In 2023, Mrs. Griffin and her family backpacked the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim in 3 days! 🎒

Mrs. Griffin is looking forward to another fun year of music! She said, "My heart is filled with joy to see the students praise God with their vocal and handbell talents!" ✝

Meet Pam Starkenburg, 1st Grade Teacher at Holy Cross School.

Mrs. Starkenburg has been a teacher for 25 years, joining Holy Cross in 1992. This will be her first year teaching first grade after many years teaching Kindergarten. She's also the Admissions Coordinator and Accelerated Reader Coordinator.

In her spare time, Mrs. Starkenburg can be found cheering on their family's four teenagers at their activities. Did you know? She loves going to Disney World and sitting out by the water. 🏰

Mrs. Starkenburg is looking forward to teaching the same class as last year and working with a great set of parents!

A big thank you to Havens Petting Farm, Kona Ice and the over 200 Holy Cross families and community friends who helped us kick off the new school year with a baa-ng! 😀 We sure enjoyed spending the afternoon getting to know you better! ❤️

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our FREE petting zoo!
Join us tomorrow, August 28, 2026 from 3:30-5:30pm. We will be hosting our annual FREE petting zoo right here at Holy Cross! There will be lots of sweet animals to interact with. We will also have Kona Ice available for purchase in addition to complimentary sandwiches from Milio's! We hope you'll join us for a fun night of fellowship to kick off the new school year!

Celebrate our 100th anniversary with a hymn sing and organ recital! 🎶

Saturday, September 26, at 2:30 pm, guest organist Bruce Bengtson will perform solo organ works on our beautiful Holtkamp organ and lead us in singing favorites like "A Mighty Fortress is our God" and "Holy, Holy, Holy". A cake reception will follow.

All are welcome for this joy-filled afternoon of music!💙
