Antiques and coffee mugs

Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.
-Psalm 37:4

It’s been said that children delight in what they have, teenagers in what they do, and adults in what they are. So adults who delight mainly in possessions and activities have immature hearts. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy what we have and what we do, but “delight” carries more depth than “enjoy.” Something we delight in is a treasure, while something we enjoy is an item we merely like. For example, we treasure a priceless antique but enjoy a coffee mug.

We sometimes get our priorities confused, though, and end up treasuring what we ought to like and liking what we ought to treasure. How do we stay on track? Worship God – delight in Him – and ask Him to conform our desires to His will. If we will do that, we will soon discover He is our greatest treasure!

Luke 18:1–8

'And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”'

Thank you, Lord, for the reminder of these verses today. Help us to persevere in prayer, knowing You will bring justice to Your elect. We praise and thank You for what You’re already doing, and we ask for Your continued strength and encouragement in these dark days. In the powerful and precious name of Jesus, Amen!

God's Stabilizer

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
-Isaiah 26:3

If you fly long enough you’ll eventually experience turbulence. It’s uncomfortable at best, terrifying at worst as the plane bounces up and down, shakes, and even takes severe drops. But the truth is, planes are made to handle turbulence. Vertical and horizontal stabilizers help steady the aircraft so it can maintain level flight. God has equipped our hearts as a stabilizer to keep us steady in the turbulence of everyday life.

Our verse tells us that if we keep our minds “stayed” on God, He will give us a sense of safety and steadiness as we face the physical, emotional, and spiritual turbulence of life in this world. So make sure you take time throughout the day to focus your thoughts on God, pray to Him, meditate on His Word... and trust He will keep you calm in the turbulence.

Major in Minors

One of the great dangers of our fast pace is that we will become so occupied with nonessentials and minors that we neglect the fundamentals, essentials, and majors. It is not enough to be busy or to be active or to be alive. The problem is some are preoccupied with the minor things of life that they allow the essentials to slip away. They save a dime and lose a dollar.

A person riding a merry-go-round whirling a hundred times travels three miles but he gets nowhere. He is merely taken for a ride. For millions, life is one continuous merry-go-round, going but never arriving, moving, but going nowhere.

When we major on our body, or our mind, or on the satisfaction of any desire, we are majoring on minors. We should be majoring on the welfare of our soul and its relationship to God,

Solomon said: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Ecclesiastes 12:13

Paul proclaimed: This one thing I do... I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13, 14

Jesus commanded: Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew 6: 33

In other words, "Seek the majors, and the minors will be added." God is all-important. Relate yourself to Him and His will, and He will relate himself to you and your needs. Don't major in minors

Devotional for 8/27

Exodus 34:14: “For thou shalt worship no other God: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a Jealous God:”

It is a fact that we have many little gods in our lives. Money, TV, sports, etc. While in themselves they aren’t evil or wrong, unless they keep us from worshipping the True and Living God.

When it pushes God to the side so we can enjoy our god’s then that is where we are wrong. God states very clearly in Exodus 20:3 that we are up have no other God’s before Him.

God demands and deserves the worship of His people.

All too often churches are empty because people are putting God secondary or even last in their lives. The things of the world are taking God’s worship.

Everyday should be a day of worship of God but on Sunday don’t you think we should surely put God first.
