Good morning!

All are welcome to join in these conversations.

The main purpose of these calls as I understand is to talk about how we, as church leaders, might advocate for voting in order to support free, fair, and trusted elections in our country.

As Bishop Bill Tesch of the NW Minnesota Synod writes, "As Lutheran Christians. we engage civic life as part of our baptismal vocation to follow Jesus Christ in our daily lives. Our participation in initiatives such as Faith in Us is informed by the scripturally grounded moral discernment reflected in the ELCA social statement, Faith and Civic Life: Seeking the Well-being of All. Supporting free, fair, and trusted elections is not partisan alignment or an endorsement of political parties or candidates. It is one expression of our calling to follow Jesus by seeking truth, loving our neighbors, practicing responsible citizenship, and working for the common good.”

At these calls next week, organizational leaders at the center of democracy protection work nationwide will give you a clear-eyed political analysis of what we need to do to defend our elections. The architects of Minnesota’s Faith Leader Resistance to Operation Metro Surge will also invite you into a shared path of clergy action based on what worked in Minnesota and what can work across the country to protect our elections and our election results.

Bishop Joy Mortensen-Wiebe

Please keep these synods in prayer as they gather in assembly:

New England, Northwestern Pennsylvania, Florida-Bahamas, Southwestern Minnesota, Lower Susquehanna, Delaware-Maryland, West Virginia-Western Maryland, Upper Susquehanna, Metropolitan Washington DC, Central States, Indiana-Kentucky, and La Crosse Area.

We pray especially for these communities discerning the call of a bishop:

East-Central Wisconsin, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Metropolitan Chicago, Northeastern Ohio, and Eastern North Dakota.

To every synod that has already gathered, thank you for all the amazing work you’ve done. To every synod still to come, we are with you.

We are the Church together.

“Lord, bless every synod gathered in assembly this season and every one still to come. Be present in the deliberations, the discernment, and the fellowship. Guide those who lead, strengthen those who serve. In a world that pulls us in every direction, ground us, root us in our faith, and help us listen, to you, to one another, and to where your Spirit is calling us.”

Amen.

Thank you all for your faithful work in moving our church FORWARD toward the beloved community God calls us to be. These seasons of election are a unique and important part of our shared work together. We offer gratitude for all who engaged in this process with faithfulness, vulnerability, and a deep-seated hope in the future we are called to live into. May all who gave so generously of their time this weekend find rest and renewal, grounded in the hope and love we know in Christ.
