From the outside, Karen Paschke's life looks a lot like anyone else's. She teaches high school math in Madison. And yet she has given herself entirely to Christ.

In the first of a two-part conversation, Bishop Hying talks with Karen, a consecrated virgin living in the world here in the Diocese of Madison. Unlike a religious sister who steps away from the world into community, a consecrated virgin gives herself completely to Christ in the midst of everyday life – a calling that reaches back to the earliest days of the Church.

Feel free to bring an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for your home enthronement that Bishop Hying can bless after the event!

Today, September 8, is the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception!

Though Scripture tells us nothing of Mary's childhood, other sources and traditions tell us that Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, were an elderly barren couple who feared that their childlessness was a sign of God's displeasure. But one day, an angel visited Anne and revealed to her that all generations would honor their future child, as Mary herself prophesied in her great Magnificat. Joachim and Anne conceived in their old age and dedicated their daughter, Mary, to God. Her birth was the morning star that heralded the dawning of a new and glorious day in her Son, Jesus Christ.

Be sure to do something to celebrate Mary's birthday today! Pray a Rosary, go to Mass, bake a cake or some other celebratory dessert, visit a church and light a candle at its statue of Mary, or sing a hymn to Mary after your family's bedtime prayers tonight. Happy birthday to our Queen and Mother!

Happy Labor Day! Let us pray today for all workers; may their work foster a sense of dignity, purpose, and creativity in their lives, may the rights of workers be protected and promoted, and may those who are working in unsafe or unjust conditions receive the wages and protection that they need. Let us also remember the unemployed and underemployed; may God lead them to opportunities that allow them to provide for themselves and for for their families.

Today is the memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta! Agnes Gonxhe was born in Albania in 1910. At the age of 18, a desire to be a missionary led her to the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland; there she received her religious name, Sister Mary Teresa. During her formation with the Sisters, she was assigned to a Loreto community in Calcutta, India, where she taught for about 20 years. She received the title "Mother" upon her solemn profession. In 1946, on a train ride to Darjeeling, Mother Teresa experienced what she described as "a call within a call" and a desire to satiate the thirst of Jesus for love and for souls. The Lord revealed to her over time that she was to serve the poorest of the poor, and in response, she established the Missionaries of Charity in 1948, exchanging her Loreto habit for the blue and white sari that has become her and the Missionaries of Charity's signature. Her community devoted themselves to loving and caring for the dying, the sick, and the poor. The order quickly spread to other parts of India and to other countries, and Mother Teresa founded religious Brothers, contemplative Brothers and Sisters, and lay movements to support the poor that her Sisters served. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and caught the attention of many media outlets during her lifetime. She died in 1997 and was canonized 10 years ago in 2016.

On Sunday, August 23, Bishop Hying presided at a triple celebration at St. Cecilia Catholic Church (part of the St. John Paul II Pastorate): The 10th anniversary of the dedication of the current church building, the installation of the church's relic of St. John Paul II in its permanent reliquary, and the blessing and rededication of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Dells just outside the church. The current church was dedicated on August 28, 2016. At the church's dedication, it received a beautiful image of Our Lady of Częstochowa (whose feast is August 26) in honor of the Polish Catholics who have been a part of the community for many decades. Many parishioners attended the 10th anniversary celebration in traditional garb that is often found in the highlands of southern Poland. The church's relic of St. John Paul II, patron saint of their pastorate, was obtained last year directly from Poland and formally installed at this celebration. And the outdoor Shrine of Our Lady of the Dells serves as a simple place of quiet reflection for the community.

Bishop Hying's first two Sacred Heart evenings of reflection are coming up! St. Mary Church in Pardeeville (part of St. John Henry Newman Parish) is holding one on Tuesday, September 8, and St. Clement Church in Lancaster (part of St. Joseph the Worker Pastorate) is next, on Sunday, September 13. All are invited for an evening of Eucharistic adoration and a reflection on the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Bishop Hying. Free Sacred Heart resources will be available, including home enthronement guides; you are encouraged to bring a Sacred Heart image to the event that Bishop Hying can bless for your home enthronement!

Bishop Hying is offering this evening of reflection in many locations across our diocese this fall, winter, and spring; if you can't make it to Pardeeville or Lancaster, there's a good chance Bishop Hying is coming to a parish near you! This year's St. Therese Lecture is just around the corner! Join us on Tuesday, September 22 at Holy Name Heights for an evening with Fr. James Kubicki, SJ, a popular author, retreat leader, and speaker; he will be speaking on Sacred Heart devotion. The lecture will be held in the Oratory at 7:00 pm, with a light reception and the opportunity to meet Fr. Kubicki and to purchase his books after the lecture.

Today is the Memorial of St. Gregory the Great! Gregory was born around 540 to a prestigious Roman family, and at age 30 he was made prefect of Rome. But after some years in civil office, he heard the Lord calling him to a simpler life, so he left his office to become a monk. His gifts for administration would soon be called upon again, though, when he was asked to become the papal ambassador to the Emperor in Constantinople. When he took this position, Rome was in trouble; flooding had destroyed the city's granaries and grain supplies, leaving people starving and prone to disease. A plague struck the city and killed Pope Pelagius II, and Gregory was named the next pope. His reign as pope was marked by his skills in administration and his deep concern for the poor and suffering. His prayers to the Mother of God were said to have ended the plague that had struck Rome, and he organized priests to visit and distribute food to the poor during the city's famine. He revised the Order of the Mass and encouraged the use and study of sacred music; for this, he is a patron saint of liturgical musicians, and an image of him appears in our new cathedral (a detail of which is seen in the attached graphic). He was declared a saint immediately upon his death due to popular acclaim, and he is honored as one of the four Great Latin Church Fathers, along with Augustine, Jerome, and Ambrose.
