It’s Tuesday. Time for a SAM report. Think summer. Think of your favorite summertime food.

Great!

You said corn. So let’s talk corn!!

Last weekend SAM had a sweet corn donation weekend running alongside the famous Sun Prairie Sweetcorn Festival.

We collected 181 ears of corn and six dozen of that total came in from the Wisconsin Dells area. Messiah families also donated $462.00 in cash for the collection.

Bonnie Eastman, Messiah liaison to the St. Stephen’s Food Pantry, kept us advised and told us to not to buy more corn as they were surprised with what SAM collected! We used some of the donations to buy onions, potatoes, and cantaloupe melons. We are on hold until further notice from Bonnie as to what they need and when. Then the SAMies will go shopping again.

For now, the pantry is well stocked and that is a beautiful blessing. Thank you all for making that happen!

But wait!

We are not done talking 🌽!

Yesterday was a work day for the SAMies at Second Harvest Food Bank. Guess what we worked on?

You guys are so smart!!

Indeed, we celebrated corn for the afternoon. We labeled 4200 cans of corn for over 300 pantries in south central Wisconsin. That is like moving 33,600 ounces of corn in that short period of time.

The SAM garden at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church is still yielding green beans, peppers, and tomatoes. The zucchini and cucumber season is over. We will not be renting a garden plot there next year as our yield versus dollars and labor spent was not at all a good return.

BUT….there is “Good News” out of all this! Have you seen what looks like a little free library at the corner of Owen and Pheasant Hill? It is right at the corner of the church property?

Well, it is actually a little free food pantry!! How cool is that? I have driven by that little self serve food pantry many times and wondered why I saw people hanging out in the immediate vicinity. Now I get it. I took apples and bananas and stocked the food pantry for these special neighbors.

Now we are talking a real good return on investment. I hope you will stop and put some goodies in that little food pantry.

The little food pantry was constructed by a private family and has no ties to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.

What a great group at Madison Pride today. Here are just a few of the folks who showed up out at Warner Park. We were proud to stand with other churches who are also welcoming, affirming and inclusive. As we heard in our sermon this weekend from Pastor Dan and Mikah Meyer, the question we must ask ourselves as Christians is this: “Who do we love?”

The Boundary Waters crew returned last night with some stories to share! Pastor Dan and 5 others ventured into the north woods with two guides and all that they needed for 5 days and 4 nights. By the end, 53 miles paddled on 15 lakes, crossed 11 portages, including a 2.4 mile (860 rod) portage, with one gushing waterfall! Many laughs, countless moments of awe, a few otters spotted, and only 1 swamp (but we got it out of the way day one).
