Hull Avenue Church of God in Christ CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST OUR AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We affirm our faith in the Bible. We affirm our faith in God. We affirm our faith in the Blessed Hope. Amen.

We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written word of God. We believe there is one God eternally existent in three persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at His return. We affirm our faith in Repentance and Salvation. We believe that the only means of being cl

eansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation. We affirm our faith in Jesus Christ. We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing in prayer. We affirm our faith in the Holy Ghost

We believe that the baptism in the Holy Ghost according to Acts 2:4 is given to believers who ask for it. We affirm our faith in Sanctification. We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy and separated life in this present world.

LESSON 11 • Second Week

"Leaders Promoting And
Guarding The Faith"

Background Reading:
Isaiah 9:16;
Jeremiah 5:30-3; 23:1;
Micah 3:5;
Acts 14:23;
1 Timothy 3:1-13

Devotional Reading:
Acts 20:28-38

Central Verse:
"Feed the flock of God, which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but be of a
ready mind"
1 Peter 5:2, KJV

Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God."
1 Peter 5:2, NLT

Key Terms:
Haphazardly—Marked by lack of plan, order, or direction.

Trustworthy—Marked by lack of plan, order, or direction.

Flock—A group someone keeps watching over: a group under the guidance of a leader.

Introduction:

In the Christian Church, leaders play an essential role in the spiritual growth and development of believers.

They assume the responsibility of promoting and guarding the faith, as well as being examples to those within and outside the faith. No church can function adequately without designated leaders.

Paul and Barnabas, who were Spirit-filled missionaries, sought guidance from the Holy Spirit through fasting and praying as they sought to choose leaders for the New Testament Church. Being led by the Holy Spirit, they appointed specific individuals to the office of Overseers and Bishops.

Certain rules and regulations must be observed when appointing leaders for the Church of our Lord. There must be moral, spiritual, and Educational requirements to lead the Church of Jesus Christ. God's business cannot be handled haphazardly, but there must be order.

Discussion:

When the New Testament Church started, Jesus had already left eleven leading men. They had a vote and replaced Judas to make twelve. Out of that twelve, God chose Peter, who had walked close to Jesus, to become the mouthpiece for the twelve. And for whatever reason, God allowed him to take the lead for the newly formed Church.

Peter, having experienced firsthand the teachings and miracles of Christ, was uniquely equipped to shepherd the early believers with wisdom and conviction. As he stepped forward in faith, he demonstrated both humility and strength, guiding the fledgling Church through times of uncertainty and opposition.

His leadership, molded by his close relationship with Jesus and his willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit, provided stability and direction for the growing community of faith. Because God only gives His best to believers, they want to provide him with their best.

Leaders must be diligent in guarding the faith of the Church, because the Church shall live by faith, and only through faith can the believer please God. God gave instructions for the leaders concerning His Church, and He expects them to follow. He does not need men who will bow to the criticism of ungodly men and women.

As the Church grew, God allowed other Leaders to emerge, because there are many areas where several different leaders are needed; one person cannot micromanage God's Church. Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, told and showed him that it was too much for one person.

The first requirement of the leader in promoting the faith is to preach and teach the Word of God to the people.

It's essential because the Word of God is a lamp unto their feet and a light unto God's people. Jesus told the leaders that they erred because they didn't know the scripture nor the power of God (Matthew 20:29).

The Prophets constantly reminded God's people that they must feed the flock of God because, as leaders, they were the Shepherds over the flock, and they had a responsibility to the sheep. The leaders are responsible for providing direction, protection, and substance for the people.

Just as there were many false prophets in the early days of the Church, there were still false prophets and teachers among the people. Leaders must be men and women of integrity; they must be honest and committed to the cause of Christ.

It's essential that leaders know the truth, for it's challenging to teach and preach what they don't understand.

Leaders cause followers to be lost when they don't know the scriptures, because they can't go where they don't know. They must preach the Word, rebuke, reprove, exhort with long suffering and doctrine (2 Timothy 4:2).

Conclusion:

Leaders must stay in touch with the Lord so that they can recognize the wolves in sheep clothing when he comes among them. He must make the church aware of the enemies and their tactics because it's necessary for the believers to know their enemies.

The Spirit of the Lord inside the believer should bear witness to the Spirit of the Lord in other believers. It's all right to question new believers who come among them, but do it with love and kindness.

The leaders must be open to receiving others who come among them. Still, they must exercise discipline regarding theological, doctrinal, and moral matters with those who are responsible for the church's direction. It is essential.

The leaders are responsible for maintaining the purity of doctrine. Members of the church interact with others in their families, on their jobs, and in other marketplaces, and they are given many other opinions that are often so far from the truth of the Word.

Some of the people who believers encounter will try to weaken the authority of God's Word, some even deny that the Bible is true and trustworthy.

When this happens, the leader must bring in separation and even silence some of these people. He must be cautious about who he allows to come into his pulpit and teach the sheep in his congregation.

Paul and the early leaders understood their mission and the authority of God. They made several trips to check on the churches. They prayed and fasted before appointing leaders over the new churches.

Questions:

What should a good leader do to promote faith to the people?

Why is it necessary for leaders to guard the faith of the church?

What did the early leaders do when a new leader was needed and why?

What does God do to leaders who lead believers astray?

How can leaders prevent false teachers and preachers from leading their flock astray?

Essential Thought-
"The people will follow the leaders as they follow Christ."

LESSON 10

"Paul's Journey To Rome"

Background Reading and Devotional Reading

Acts 9:15-16; 21:4;
Acts 23:23-35;28:16-24;

Romans 1:9-10

Central Verse:

"And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, 'Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome."
Acts 23:11, KJV

"That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said,
'Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have been a witness to me in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome as well."
Acts 23:11, NIV

Key Terms:

Appealed—To make an earnest request: a legal proceeding by which a case is brought to a higher court for review.

Plot—A secret plan for accomplishing a usually evil or unlawful end.

Poisonous—A secret plan for accomplishing a usually evil or unlawful end.

Introduction:

After Paul's conversion on the Damascus Road, his life became one of dedication, commitment, and sacrifice to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He learned that his life was not his own because it belonged entirely to the Lord. He discovered that decisions about his life had to be guided by the Lord. The believers must know and accept that he cannot direct his own steps, but the Lord orders the steps of a good man.

Jeremiah chapter ten and verse twenty-three says, "0 Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his own steps." "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: And he de-lighteth in his way." (Psalms 37:23).

Discussion:

God had called Paul into a new life, a much better life; he was no longer a murderer; he was called to a life of God's purpose, filled with God's significance, marked by unexplainable joy and peace.

This life had a different meaning for Paul, as he could no longer abide by his thoughts or educational pursuits. God wanted him to be bold, yet gentle; strong, yet vulnerable; judgmental, yet filled with mercy.

Paul's allegiance was to God, and he could not afford to allow it to sway. God had told him from the beginning that he would endure suffering for the sake of the kingdom. Saints of God, when you accept Jesus as the Lord of your life, you are in a position where you will sometimes be lied on, mistreated, misunderstood, overlooked, talked about, judged wrongly, and hated.

Those are some of the things believers need to be prepared for. God is faithful and He will direct and order the believer's steps. However, the believer must put their trust in God, as Paul did, and God will lead and guide them where He wants them to go.

By the time Paul was preparing to go to Rome, he had made two Missionary Journeys and was on his third one. He loved the saints in Rome, and he sent them word that he was constantly remembering them in his prayers.

He told them that it was God's will for him to come and that God had opened the door for him to do so. What Paul didn't know then was that he would go to Rome, but God's method of getting him there would be as a prisoner in chains.

God's way is so different from our ways, but believers learn to say, "not my will but thy will be done." Paul wanted to go to Jerusalem because he had heard how the saints were being persecuted.

He wanted to see what he could do to help them and encourage them. Some warned him not to go to the saints, as they knew the hazards it would create.

But Paul insisted that he was not only willing to be bound, but to die in Jerusalem for the name of his Lord Jesus Christ. Each believer must love Jesus enough that, if necessary, they would be willing to die for their walk with Him.

Paul's journey to Rome is a significant event in the New Testament. It marks the Apostle Paul's transition from his missionary endeavors to his role as a prisoner for the sake of the gospel.

When Paul went to Jerusalem, he was arrested because of the riot in the temple and kept in the Roman barracks. His teaching stirred the Jews up and caused much havoc in the religious community. The Jewish leaders falsely accused him of defiling the temple.

The Romans transferred Paul to Caesarea for trial after a plot was discovered against his life. Believers don't ever forget, the devil is out to kill you because he does not want any of you to be productive; he would rather see you dead. Remember, the weapon may be formed, but it cannot prosper against the chosen believers.

During his trial before the Sanhedrin, Governor Felix increased his jail time, and later, Governor Festus suggested that Paul return to Jerusalem to stand trial.

Paul recognized the danger that would put him in, so he asserted his rights as a Roman citizen by appealing to Caesar for a fair trial (Acts 25:1012). As a result of this appeal, he was sent to Rome.

Conclusion:

His trip to Rome was filled with many problems, for they journeyed during a time which was not good for sea travel.

A great storm, a wind of hurricane force called a Northeaster, came upon them. Eventually, they were all cast off the ship by it, swimming, holding on to broken pieces of the ship, or whatever they could use to survive.

All 276 passengers, including Paul, made it to an island named Malta, where Paul was bitten by a snake on his hand while gathering sticks to make a fire.

The snake was poisonous, but Paul shook it off into the fire. The natives of the island thought that Paul would die, but God allowed him to live. Because Paul didn't swell up and die from the snake bite, the natives of the island changed their opinion of him.

At first, they thought that he was a bad person, and the snake was sent to kill him. But when he didn't swell up and die, they changed their minds and began to see him as a god. It became clear to the people that God's hand was upon Paul, for the people of Malta saw the glory of God and heard the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul and the other passengers stayed in Malta for three months.

They finally arrived in Rome, where Paul was granted the privilege of living by himself, accompanied by a Roman guard for his protection.

For two years, he stayed in his own rented house and was able to minister to the people. God will take care of each believer who trusts and obeys, and Paul did. He kept His promise and allowed him to make it to Rome.

Questions:

Why did Paul feel such an urgency to go to Rome?

What brought the change in Paul that made him willing to die for the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Why was Paul arrested in Jerusalem?

Why did he appeal to Caesar?

What happened on the island of Malta?

What happened to Paul after he arrived in Rome?

Essential Thought:

"God wants to give each of his children the desires of their hearts, but they must line up with his will."

Lesson 10 • May 3, 2026

"Increased Faith"

BIBLE BASIS: Luke 17:1-10

BIBLE TRUTH: Jesus teaches His followers that even the smallest amount of genuine faith can rebuke sin.

MEMORY VERSE: "Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him (Luke 17:3)."

Biblical Definitions
A. Trespass (Luke 17:3, 4) hamartano (Gk.)—To violate religious law; sin.

B. Faith (Luke 17:5, 6) pistis (Gk.)—Assurance, belief; a strong and welcome conviction

Introduction:

Christ Rejected
As Jesus traveled toward Jerusalem, He used many opportunities to teach the people, including His disciples. He was always concerned about righteous living and proper treatment of others, since these contribute to harmonious living in our communities. Jesus has showed us the way, but we sometimes fail to follow it. Many communities are fragmented by selfishness and deceit. The root of the problems begins with sin and the need for forgiveness.

We are all going to face God on the Day of Judgement, so we must repent of our sins before we die(Luke 13:1-5). And salvation is open to all who believe, not a select group of people. We have to be humble in all that we do(Luke 14:7-11).

I. Forgive Others
(Luke 17:1-4)

Question 1

What did Jesus say you should do if someone trespasses against you?

II. Have Genuine Faith
(Luke 17:5, 6)

III. Obey God
(Luke 17:7-10)

Question 2

Complete the following "...when he is come from the field, _____ and sit _____ to _____."

04/30/2026

The Church Of God In Christ, through its Office of the Presiding Bishop and the Social Justice Ministry, issues the following statement in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais:

We stand at a troubling crossroads in American democracy. What generations of Black Americans secured through prayer, protest, sacrifice, and unwavering faith is now being systematically dismantled by judicial decree. This decision represents not merely a legal setback, but a moral failure that strikes at the very heart of justice and equal representation.

Scripture declares in Proverbs 31:8–9 to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and to defend the rights of the poor and needy. The erosion of protections once guaranteed under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a direct contradiction of this biblical mandate. The right to vote is not simply a political privilege; it is a sacred trust tied to human dignity and agency.

The history of Black participation in American democracy has never been gifted, it has always been wrestled from the grip of injustice. From the bloodshed of Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge to the courage of countless unnamed believers who risked everything for the ballot, our journey has been marked by resilience in the face of resistance. To weaken those hard-won protections is to dishonor that legacy and endanger future generations.

This ruling opens the door to discriminatory redistricting practices that dilute Black voting strength and silence communities already marginalized. It signals a retreat from the progress that made this nation more just, more representative, and more aligned with its professed ideals.

We reject any effort—judicial, legislative, or otherwise—that seeks to render Black voices invisible in the democratic process. We affirm that justice requires equity, and equity demands vigilance.

The Church Of God In Christ calls upon federal lawmakers to act with urgency to restore and strengthen voting rights protections, including the immediate passage of comprehensive legislation that safeguards against racial discrimination in voting. We further call upon faith leaders, congregations, and communities across this nation to organize, educate, and mobilize in defense of democracy.

Micah 6:8 reminds us of what the Lord requires: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. In this moment, doing justice requires more than words, it demands action.

We will not be silent while the foundations of democracy are undermined. We will pray, we will advocate, and we will stand firm until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Sincerely,

Bishop J. Drew Sheard
Presiding Bishop and Chief Apostle
Church Of God In Christ, Inc.
