Doles Cemetery Trust

Doles Cemetery Trust Doles Methodist Church was established in approximately 1827, with the cemetery being started shortly afterward.

After a long and proud history, Doles United Methodist Church changed its name to The Well UMC in 2012. Unfortunately the church had to close its doors in 2016. The Doles Cemetery Trust was formed for the primary reason of perpetual care of the cemetery grounds. As such there is no support being provided by any church organization. The Trust depends solely on donations and fees collected from new

interments. If you have relatives buried at Doles, please consider a donation to the upkeep of the cemetery. If you were a member, please consider including a donation or reoccurring trust donation in your Will.

I am one of the Trustee's for Doles Cemetery on Thomaston Rd. This Memorial Day we honor Richard Taylor who killed in action in the Philippine Islands on Sept. 17, 1900 in what is known as the Spanish American War. He enlisted March of 1900 and was assigned to L Company 15th Regiment, US infantry. He was 21 years of age and was a farmer.
Remember that this weekend is not about the hot dogs and start of the summer fun. It's about the young men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice on some beach, mountain, desert or ocean. Remember their loved one who also faced that loss.

If you do please read the attached letter. Our funds are running very low. We have maybe three more years of money for maintenance. Do you want your family members to become a forgotten cemetery in Georgia and join the hundreds of unkept cemeteries in our state.
You see the pictures of our cemetery here. Drive down any rural road in Georgia and you will pass dozens of forgotten cemeteries along the way.

Dear friends,

We hope you and your family had a great start to the new year.
The Doles Cemetery Trustees would like to express gratitude for your previous engagement with efforts to enrich Macon’s long history of Doles Cemetery.
The trustees are now struggling with the task of providing regular maintenance as well as structural repairs. Graves are in need of reinforcement or replacement of slabs. Many slabs are broken, and some are without names and dates. Finally, some of the retaining walls need replacing.
The trustees continue to work on updates to the cemetery records, realizing that this history is an important link to our ancestors. The cemetery grounds are a beautiful and peaceful place which honors those who have gone before us. The cemetery trustees volunteer their time and service because they love it dearly.
Stop by to see the greatest needs. You may find that your own family plot needs special attention. Please share this post with your friends. We appeal to you to consider donating to Doles Cemetery. No amount is too small.
We are grateful for your time and donations.
Please mail donations to:

This weekend we honor Clarence Brooks who was KIA in WWII and is buried here in Doles Cemetery.
Memorial Day is for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. We also remember those who served in the armed forces. Buried here in Doles are soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War.
Doles Cemetery is also a final resting place for those who served in God's army. The battles they fought were not with guns, but with the Word of God and love.

This weekend, while driving to the beach or firing up the grill remember you have those freedoms because somebody made the ultimate sacrifice.
We place flags on the graves of all veterans as a symbol of thanks for their service. There are several in our cemetery who lost their lives defending our country. Their flags are in memory and respect.

Again we are at that date on the calendar, Confederate Memorial Day 2023. In these days and times of removal of Confederate monuments, I take time as the editor of this page to input my personal thoughts.

First of all, let me say that one of the main causes for the Civil War should not, nor should it ever be allowed again. We should use these memorials as reminders of a time we dare not repeat. However, we should remember the sacrifice of the men, women and families who lost so much on either side.
I have placed both Confederate and American flags on each grave site for the following reason. Before war was declared by anyone, these men were American citizens first. Then after the surrender and the war was over, they signed oaths of allegiance to the United States of America to become citizens again. So they deserve both flags.
I am proud of this great country! So many other countries have gone through civil war and not come out for the better. But the United States of America stood the test and was refined in fire to become the greatest country in the world and a leader in freedom.
May God Bless the United States of America and all of its people.

Monday April 25th is Confederate Memorial Day. We have placed flags on each CSA soldier's grave in memory of the person. Not the cause they fought for or other political reasons.
Doles Cemetery has 14 Civil War veterans buried there.
We also place flags on the graves of those who served in the Armed Forces of the USA each Memorial Day and Veterans Day. We have 40 veterans buried there, some who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Doles Cemetery is one of Bibb Counties oldest cemeteries, founded in 1827. Until 2013 the cemetery was part of Doles United Methodist Church, but the church had to close. Doles Cemetery Trust was established for the upkeep of the property surrounding the family plots. Individual families who have loved ones buried there are responsible for the upkeep of the family plots. Funds are not available in the trust for those repairs, therefore it is up to the families. This past Monday, April 27th was Confederate Memorial Day in Georgia, and Confederate Battle Flags were placed on the 14 graves of veterans of that terrible time in our country. We remember and honor these men who fought for what they thought was right during their lives. Right or wrong by OUR standards in these times, they still answered the call to arms. This coming Memorial Day we will place U.S. flags in remembrance of those who were members of the Armed Forces of this great country, some who gave the ultimate sacrifice, for our freedom. Again in November U.S. flags will be placed to honor these men for their service and to honor all those in our Armed Forces.I invite you to come walk around the cemetery with humble respect and view the graves of some of the people who helped to form and establish Bibb county in 1822. If you are tracing your family genealogy, you might have an ancestor buried here. There are no famous people buried here that I am aware of, but all of them mattered to their families.

To all who have viewed and shared our page thank you. Your interest in our cemetery is appreciated. As we wind down from this July 4th Independence Day I would like to reflect that in our Cemetery we have over 48 veterans from every war this country has faced since 1860 Some of these died from battle wounds but many just over time. They all have one thing in common they were defending their country.
The trustees of Doles Cemetery do the best they can to preserve the cemetery. But we need your help. Any donation that you can make for any amount will be greatly appreciated. If you have family buried in the cemetery please contact me through Facebook or at the numbers posted on the arch.
Once again thank you for your interest in Doles Cemetery. God bless the United States of America.

Doles Cemetery, located at 6238 Thomaston Road in Macon, is one of Bibb county's oldest church cemeteries, founded in 1827! This cemetery was started for the faithful of Doles Methodist Church, later Doles United Methodist Church. In 2012, Doles was closed as a church; as a result funding for the up keep of the cemetery grounds ended. Our foresighted members started a trust fund many years ago and it is those funds that have kept paying for upkeep of this cemetery until now.
Unfortunately, funds are running short. There is no support from the United Methodist Church and no government funds available for the upkeep, even though numerous veterans are buried there.
I have attached several pictures of repairs that need to be done soon. Many of the families are not around to do the repairs. Some walls, as you can see, are leaning. Blocks on others need to be replaced.
Without substantial donations, the future is bleak. The future includes high weeds, collapsed border walls and fallen trees. Damages to monuments and markers will go unrepaired and the cemetery will become an eyesore.
If you have loved ones or friends buried at Doles Cemetery, we need your help.
Donations can be made to: Doles Cemetery Trust, % Michael Barron, Trustee, 1347 Happy Trail Macon Ga. 31220. You will receive a letter back from the Trustees thanking you for your donation.
