C. H. Spurgeon — Now, beloved, there be many who think that God the Father is at best but an indifferent spectator of salvation. Others do belie him still more. They look upon Him as an unloving, severe Being, who had no love to the human race, and could only be made loving by the death and agonies of our Saviour. Now, this is a foul libel upon the fair and glorious grace of God the Father, to whom forever be honor: for Jesus Christ did not die to make God loving, but he died because God was loving.

J. C. Ryle has rightly noted, “It may be that our contemporary affluence and comfortable lifestyles have insensibly introduced a plague of worldliness and self–indulgence and a love of ease. What were once called luxuries are now comforts and necessities, and self–denial and "enduring hardness" are consequently little known. It may be that the enormous amount of controversy which marks this age has insensibly dried up our spiritual life. We have too often been content with zeal for orthodoxy and have neglected the sober realities of daily practical godliness. Be the causes what they may, I must declare my own belief that the result remains. There has been of late years a lower standard of personal holiness among believers than there used to be in the days of our fathers. The whole result is that the Spirit is grieved and the matter calls for much humiliation and searching of heart.”

Edward Pearse — “Oh, . . ., behold and wonder! Christ comes from heaven, quits His throne, leaves the bosom of His Father in which He had, with infinite delight, lain from eternity! Behold the wonder, the Lord of life dies. The God of blessing was made a curse, the infinitely beloved Son treads the winepress of the Father’s wrath; Heaven descends into hell, glory veils and eclipses itself under shame and ignorance. The infinitely holy One is made sin, and all this to redeem, and redeeming, espouse poor sinners to Himself!”

James Durham: “Consider the great things [Jesus] undertook, not only to be man, but a poor . . . [lowly, humble] man. It had been much for him to have humbled himself to be a monarch of the whole world . . . yet he not only will not be so, but emptied himself, and became a worm in a manner, and no man, an out-cast of the people. O such a proof of his love!”

Dabney again: “God has provided for the parents social and moral influences so unique, so extensive, that no other earthly power, or all others together, can substitute them in fashioning the child’s character. The home example, armed with the venerable authority of the father and the mother, repeated amidst the constant intimacies of the fireside, seconded by filial reverence, ought to have the most potent plastic force over character. And this unique power God has guarded by an affection, the strongest, most deathless, and most unselfish, which remains in the breast of fallen man. Until the magistrate can feel a love, and be nerved by it to a self-denying care and toil, equal to that of a father and a mother, he can show no pretext for assuming any parental function.”

R. L. Dabney writes concerning public schools:

“But nearly all public men and divines declare that the State schools are the glory of America, that they are a finality, and in no event to be surrendered. And we have seen that their complete secularization is logically inevitable. Christians must prepare themselves then, for the following results: All prayers, catechisms, and Bibles will ultimately be driven out of the schools . . . Humanity always finds out, sooner or later, that it cannot get on without a religion, and it will take a false one in preference to none. Infidelity and practical ungodliness will become increasingly prevalent among Protestant youth, and our churches fwill have a more arduous contest for growth if not for existence.”
